I closed on my condo on August 16th 2009. The condo “came with” a GE washer and dryer that the developer installed. On the day I moved in, I ran the washer one time. The machine starting making funny noises and then I smelled a burning rubber smell so I called the developer who scheduled an appointment on Aug 21st. The tech told my developer that the machine was likely overloaded (doubtful) and that a t-shirt was stuck in the exhaust. How a t-shirt can get sucked into the exhaust of a washing machine is beyond me. The tech said he needed two men to take the machine apart.

The developer, blaming this on me for overloading the machine, told me to call GE and reschedule, which I did for Sept 2nd. The same tech came out, by himself, and told me he needed two men for the job (which I had told GE when I made the appointment). He verbally told me he would come by on Wed Sept 10th at 7:30 am to fix it but I did not get a conf #

That Monday I got a call from GE confirming my appointment for Tue Sept 9th from 8 – 12 (which was a day early but I accepted). At 10:30 am on Tue I called GE and was told that they would be at least 1.5 hours late (1:30 pm). At this point I had to cancel and get to work. I had expected this appointment to start at 7:30 am. I called and canceled at 10:30 but for whatever reason their tech still showed up at 1:30 (a point that GE used to make it seem like my fault). My appointment was rescheduled for that Saturday Sept 13th but again I had no confirmation # and GE said they had no record. So I rescheduled AGAIN for today Tue Sept 16th 1-5 and asked that they call 1 hr in advance so I can leave work and meet the tech. The rep said this was okay and put it in the notes. I called to confirm at 3 pm and was told that the tech arrived and left already because I was not home. He did not call me. I was at work waiting for the call and could have left at anytime.

I have no idea of this washing machine works or not but I would not recommend any GE products based on the service I have recieved. Good luck for those of you that took the plunge.

This broke after one use. T-shirt supposedly got sucked into the exhaust and wrapped around the barrell of the machine. I have not seen the t-shirt (it’s inside the machine) so I can’t confirm but I have done plenty of loads of laundry in my life and it was not overloaded.

  2. Shauna, TX says:

In the first three months that we owned our home (new construction), we had multiple service calls, the second to last of which resulted in the repairman not putting it back together correctly and it flooded my BRAND NEW HOUSE.

They refused to replace the machine despite four service calls in 3 months and one following the flooding of my house. I requested that an outside repairman come in on GE’s dime because I was really sick of the same guy showing up and further breaking my washer.

I know it’s a basic model, but you shouldn’t have to worry about having this much hassle with ANY appliance, or the company that makes it. I will NEVER buy GE appliances again and would not recommend them to anyone, regardless of how great of a deal you might get.

  3. broz says:

Had the unit for a few years now, but it’s in a second home so I rarely use it. The unit stopped working and the repairman ($65) said the washer’s motor failed. He also said it would cost almost as much to repair as a new one and suggested the latter. That’s the big downside of a combo unit…even though the dryer works fine you throw away the entire unit because of a motor failure. Will look for a separate washer and dryer and stack myself.

  4. Ron says:

Nice compact stacking for my small laundry area.

  5. Lucas says:

It’s a decent unit. A little loud, but I live in a loft, so everything is loud. The dryer works well and the cycles are not too long. It’s just a good old fashioned washing machine perfect for a utility closet in my condo.

  6. Ken, VT says:

I recently purchased a GE Spacemaker Laundry washer/dryer stacked combo (Model WSM2700HWW) and have been very disapointed with its performance. The washer portion has been fine, but the dryer does not dry clothes. The automatic dry setting quits when the clothes are still completely wet. This model does not allow you to select the tempature setting with the drying cycle. Only options are high heat for timed dry, medium heat for “automatic” sensing dry, and low heat for permanent press. I bought this on-line without looking at it in person, so my fault on the options. But even without the ability to select heat and cycle, I would at least expect a dryer to dry clothes.

  7. Penn says:

I had to get a new door for my trailer. I had tried several place all of which gave me a really high estimate. I went to Home Depot and talk to an employee named Manny. Manny gave me a lot of help. He showed me the difference in the doors, and the measurements. He showed me two ways to go, not just one, and several different prices. I am very happy with the service he gave me. I am going to have the new door done next week. And I am sure that it will be great. Thanks to Manny and home depot for making this a great experience

  8. Charlie says:

Our machine has had rust since day one. There is a huge spot in the dryer and now it is rusting on the outside cover of the washing machine. Because I procrastinated in calling they will NOT cover the cost of repairing the dryer (replace completely) and the washing machine is rusting. Clothing gets stuck between the drum and wheel inside the dryer and the clothes do not dry. Save your money

  9. Savannah says:

I recently purchased the GE Spacemaker W/D for a condo rental unit I own. I was pleasantly surprised at the capacity of the unit. It really isn’t that much smaller than a full-size W/D. The access panel makes it easy to connect the exhaust and water lines.
