Featured Review (58): LG 2.4 Cu. Ft. Washer/Dryer Combo WM3431HW

by Jonathan McLelland

If you have read any of my previous articles, than you are well aware that I absolutely love the company LG. In my opinion there is not another company that produces such high quality products at a all-around reasonable price. No matter what you’re looking for, LG most likely makes it, and makes it well.

One of their newest products is the LG 2.4 Cu. Ft. 9-Cycle Washer/Dryer Combination, Model: WM3431HS. This washing machine is unlike any other, because it is also a dryer. You read me right, this one machine is both a washer and dryer in one. I know, crazy right?

One of the coolest features is the up-front electronic controls that are operated through the Dial-A-Cycle operation. This makes picking your cycles extremely simple and easy. The size of this washer/dryer isn’t too impressive, but it is a decent size being 2.4 cubic feet.

LG-WM3431HW-combo washerYou’ll be able to wash and dry a decent amount of clothing in one load. Another cool feature is the 9 various wash cycles. Some of these cycles include permanent press, sanitary cycle and cotton/towels – just to name a few. You also get five various dry times that range from 30 minutes all the way to 150 minutes. This feature provides you with the customization that is needed in order to properly dry all types of clothing.

Another feature is the various spin speeds that you get to choose from. These range from low to extra high, as well as coming with five wash/rinse temperature levels. All of these various cycle features are perfect because there are literally hundreds of different types of clothing, and one basic cycle can’t wash them all. Probably one of the neatest features is the SenseClean system, which automatically adjusts your water and wash time to match the size of your load.

This feature actually saves you money, because you won’t be using the same amount of water for a load of towels as you would for a load of underwear. And unlike most machines, this washer can actually sense that. Worries that the sensors stop with the washing? Well, don’t be because there is the Sensor Dry system that actually detects moisture levels inside of the drum and thus automatically adjusts the drying time and the temperature to prevent your clothes from getting overheated or over-dried.

This machine can be set to wash and dry your clothes, or you can choose to only wash your clothes or only dry them. Thus you get almost a total of three various machines in one! On the front of the machine there is a time-remaining display that shows you the status of your wash cycle so you know exactly how much longer you have until your clothes are completely finished. This is a great way to time-manage your day.

As you can see, LG really does think of it all. And having a washing machine and dryer in one, is one of their coolest inventions yet. The price for this all-in-one machine will average around $1400, however, it is well worth it. If you are looking for a great washer and dryer, but don’t have that much space in your laundry room, than this machine is absolutely for you. And with a name like LG attached to it, you know that it is going to uphold the highest standards.

Washer-Dryer Combos: What To Look For

Stacked washer-and-dryer units come in two forms. Some are all-in-one units called laundry centers. The other configuration is to mount a separately purchased dryer on top of a front-load washer. Not all washers can be stacked this way. The last option is a washer-dryer combo, which washes and dries clothing in the same drum. In general, experts say to consider the following when shopping for a laundry center, stackable washer and dryer or washer-dryer combo:

3 washer dryer combos

  • Separate washers and dryers can often be stacked to save space. This is a good option if you have enough space, but keep in mind that only models labeled as “stackable” can safely be stacked. You’ll need to buy a kit to safely stack the machines, and keep in mind that the total height of the stack may make the dryer hard to reach.
  • Laundry centers are easier to reach than stacked washers and dryers. However, they tend to have fewer features, and 27-inch units (the most common) take up almost as much floor space. 24-inch units will often fit in a closet or kitchen, but only hold about half as much laundry.
  • All-in-one washer-dryers can be used without venting or a 220-volt power supply. This makes them a great choice for apartment-dwellers, but they do have some serious drawbacks. They have limited capacity, may take several hours to finish a load of laundry and are more prone to breakdowns.
  • Front-loading washers are better than top-loading washers because they use less water and electricity. Their fast spin speed removes more water from clothing to cut drying time, they’re easier on fabrics and they use smaller amounts of regular detergents.
  • It’s worth paying extra for a moisture sensor in the dryer. A moisture sensor detects the level of moisture in the load and automatically shuts off the machine when clothes are dry, drying laundry more accurately than a thermostat sensor. Despite the extra cost, a moisture sensor helps save energy and reduces wear and tear on your clothes. Most models these days have this feature.
  • A gas dryer is preferable to an electric dryer, if you have the option. Gas dryers are usually cheaper to run (they often pay back their higher purchase cost within the first year, depending on usage and local utility rates) and tend to dry a little quicker. Full-size, 27-inch laundry centers are generally available with a gas dryer, but smaller 24-inch models are usually electric-only.

Experts say that you should be sure to measure your available space before shopping, including clearance for electric cords and the dryer’s exhaust duct, doorways and potential obstructions leading to the location. Be aware that most stacked units require a 240-volt outlet. If you don’t have one where you plan to install the unit, you will need to install one.

Featured Review (54): LG WM3431HS Washer & Dryer Combination

LG makes high quality appliances, and the WM3431HS Washer & Dryer Combination shows off their technological know-how. They have always been a business that carefully plans the solutions they will incorporate into their products, and this ventless all-in-one is no exception.
This machine allows anyone to enjoy the benefits of an in home washer& dryer, whether you have the hook-ups, electrical,  venting,  the space, or not. You do not need any of these things to get the wash done at home. Talk about convenience!

The LG WM3431HS will wash, dry or both without ever leaving the machine. You can pre program it to start when you want, and you’ll enjoy the five temperature selections and 9 wash options. But most of all, you’ll enjoy having your laundry done right in your home, not carrying it up or down stairs or across town. And that freedom in itself  is the main reason that the technology of the LG WM3431HS is such a wonderful thing! More time for you and to do what you want to do!

If you are searching for the LG wm3431hs ventless washer dryer combo, you’re here for a very good reason….you have no ability to vent your laundry and are likely also short on space. Unfortunately, technology in this area has not exactly been booming! There is both good and bad to this unit, but if your circumstances require a vent free washer dryer combination, you will not be disappointed.  Here is an honest review of the LG wm3431hs, so you can make the choice that’s right for you.

LG WM3431HS washer dryer combo

Here are some of the Great Features you will enjoy when using the LG Ventless Combo:

•  The LG Vent free does not require hookups of ANY kind. You only need a regular 3-prong outlet. You can hook up to a sink, drain into a tub, it requires NO Vent. It does require:  Electricity, Running Water, and a place to Drain. Put it on wheels, and it becomes a fully PORTABLE WASHER/DRYER.
• All in one washer & dryer unit. Being that it is only one front loading unit, you simply save space and hassle. No moving wet clothes to the dryer, they are already there.
• The LG wm3431hs has a built in water level sensor to automatically adjusts to the size of the load.
• There is a super hot cycle for whites and stains.
• The cost up front is high. But, if you currently pay for laundry, travel, and spend your day’s miserable in a Laundromat or a basement, it can certainly pay for itself. Also, it is very energy efficient (energy star rated) and conserves water also…Definitely ‘green’.
• Size is a big plus. This unit is smaller than a stackable washer dryer unit, so it saves space (great for small dwellings). Fits under most standard kitchen counters.
• Speed wash allows you to get a load washed fast, in about a half hour.
• Timer/Delay wash on the LG wm3431hs allows you to set a load to begin later. The timer allows up to 19 hours. Nice, since you don’t need to switch the clothes to the dryer.
• Clothes last longer. Giving up forced air to dry preserves color and causes less shrinking in garments.

To continue our LG WM3431 review….it is not exactly perfect, here is what we do not love:

•  Capacity. It is simply not a huge machine. Therefore, it washes smaller loads. If you are used to the supersized machines at the Laundromat, you will notice the difference.
•  Length of cycles. It takes about 2-5 hours to complete a wash/dry cycle in the LG wm3431hs. That is a complete wash and dry. Again, not fast like with big machines, but you can do other things while it works.
• Can be Noisy. Although I don’t always notice, I hear it expel water at times, others I don’t notice at all. But for most cycles, I really must say it’s otherwise truly quiet.
• Drying is not the same. If you have been using forced air drying, you will notice longer dry times, damp clothes upon removal and wrinkles. The good thing is, after you hang or shake, the clothes usually don’t need much more drying and the wrinkles do work themselves out. I recommend you don’t skimp on the fabric softener when using any vent free dryer unit.
• The Front-Loading door locks. This can be a pain if you decide you want to add something, You will be forced to wait a few minutes before it will unlock if it is in cycle. This is for good reason, but still a pain.
• There is no lint trap. Since there will still be some lint, this will accumulate in the dryer or in the ducts in the machine. It is not impossible to access, but you do have to remove the outside cover to remove it every 1-2 years. Similar to cleaning out your piping on a standard dryer.

Overall, we simply feel the LG WM 3431HS Washer dryer combo is a very good deal for your dollar. Sure, it took me a while to see that, but doing laundry at home, well, there is alot to be said for how sweet that is! So, even though we won’t say it is perfect, it will make your life so much easier. You just need to decide…..How much is that worth to you?

Featured Review (53): LG Washer-Dryer All-in-One Model WM3988HWA

by Moira Richardson

Maybe you’ve thought about buying an energy-saving all-in-one washer-dryer, but you’ve been put of by the price tags that often top $1500. That sure is a lot to pay for a washing machine, so is it worth it? Yes!

LG WM3988HWA washer dryer combo all in oneMy friend purchased her LG allinone washer and dryer (model number WM3988HWA) in August 2007. I had the opportunity to use the machine for six months, and let me tell you, I loved it. Although the initial investment is steep, this machine is a powerhouse that washes and dries your laundry is a little over the time you’d take to do a regular load of laundry. The 4.2 cu. Ft. All-in-One steam washer retails for $1999.00 at Best Buy, but it comes with a 1 year warranty for labor and parts, with 5 years on the drum and motor. The cost of running the machine is about $15 per year. If you were to add up the time, energy, gas prices, and quarter costs of lugging your laundry to the local Laundromat, you’ll likely discover that this bad boy will save you time and money in the long run.

The best thing is that this doesn’t require an outside air vent, so it’s perfect for apartment residents. You just need an electric outlet and a water hook-up and you are good to go. The 4.2 cubic foot washer dryer can accommodate an ordinary sized load of laundry. The drum might look smaller than your ordinary washer, but you can pack the clothes tight and the washer will work at its best. The total time to wash and dry is about 2 hours, but a nice feature is that when you take the clothes out, they will feel slightly damp; however, after a good shake, they will be dry and wrinkle-free. It’s almost like magic.

The clothes don’t smell as strongly of detergent as with regular laundry, partly because you use significantly less detergent, and because the steam gets rid of odors. This is great for people with sensitive skin, because clothes also come out super soft. The use of the LG also seems to help clothes last longer: with less agitation, the clothes stay softer and nicer for longer. I had a t-shirt that still looked brand-new after six months, but the minute I moved out-of-state and used a regular washer, it lost that like-new luster. (Boo!)

The best feature is the timer feature. You can put your laundry in before you go to work, and program it to finish right as you get home from work. Or you can put your laundry in before you go to bed, and wake up to freshly laundered clothing. For anyone who works early and needs a lot of clean clothing for his or her job, this is a lifesaving machine.

Featured Review (51): Haier XQG50-11 Front Load Washer/Dryer Combo Review

Haier XQG50-11 Front Load Washer/Dryer Combo is indeed an economical product from the Chinese manufacturer. There are no second thoughts about it. Right from the price to the amount of usage of soap, this is highly economical. But there are definitely lots of shortcomings. Let us analyze it briefly.

Haier XQG50-11 Front Load Washer/Dryer Combo got to be praised for its silent operation and there are hardly any shakes. No wonder it weighs around 170 pounds. You need definitely two people to carry it inside your home. And in my case the delivery man looked like Arnold and he hardly asked me for help.

haier XQG50-11It would be better on your path to follow the manual supplied with it. I have a marble floor and moving it over with its wonderful wheels was absolutely easy. But my neighbor had a very hard time moving it, as his rooms were totally carpeted. I saw the carpet getting attached to the wheels, it would be better if you are a team of two while moving the equipment over the carpet.

Haier XQG50-11 Front Load Washer/Dryer Combo comes with a little drawer on the top of the washer. This is indeed a thoughtful addition and I would praise it all the way as I am very famous in my neighborhood for misplacing things. You can place your cleaning agents safely in it.

Unpacking this Haier XQG50-11 equipment is indeed a quite easy job. You definitely need a screw driver to remove those shipping bolts. There would be three bolts and you can hardly miss them as they are an exact replica of each other. These bolts ought to be removed.

Haier XQG50-11 uses very less soap compared with other products in the market. I would not advise you to use liquid soap as it is indeed a very big nuisance. It fills up the whole machine.

Haier XQG50-11 fails miserably when it comes to drying and you definitely need to run the machine for extra hours in order to dry your clothes. This is indeed a lousy dryer and it is in a way a nuisance. If you are comfortable in making your machine run for extra hours, this would not be a problem. But if you need a perfect dryer, this machine is not your solution.

Overall this Haier XQG50-11 is suitable for people who really care for their budget. This is a highly economical device and it uses very less soap. Good for the environment as well as your pocket. If you do not care for the dryer, you can buy this little giant.

Featured Review (50): Summit Front Load Washer Dryer Combo Review SPWD1160C

by Jonathan McLelland

While the notion of having a washing machine and dryer in one machine may seem like a dream, there are many appliances on the market that will both wash and dry your clothes in one machine. These washer/dryer combos are some of the most unique appliances within the industry, but they are not for everyone. The only reason why I would recommend one of these products for consumers is when they have strict space limitations. If you are searching for a washer/dryer combo, than I would suggest beginning your search with the Summit All-in-One Front Load Washer/Dryer Combo, Model: SPWD1160C. As stated earlier, this appliance is not for every consumer; however, it can be answer that many have been searching for.

summit-SPWD1160CMain Product Features:

Perhaps the main reason why you are searching for this type of washing machine and dryer is because you have a size restriction within your home. Since you are able to both wash and dry your clothes within this one appliance, you will save a massive amount of space within your laundry room.

The overall capacity of this washer/dryer combo is 11 pounds, which is about the size of a normal laundry load. The stainless steel drum will accurately clean and dry your clothes without damaging them. The upside of having a stainless steel washing/drying drum is the clothes will not damage the actual drum. Now, you won’t have to worry about missing coins or washing jeans with metal bolts on them, because the drum is resistant to any type of scratches and other damage.

The water that travels throughout this washing machine is preheated so your clothes are able to be cleaned faster and more accurately. Another great feature about having preheated water, is you will be able to take a shower at the same time as this washer because it utilizes an internal water heater, and thus doesn’t require your hot water from your home.

There are a total of three different water levels that come with this washing machine, which allows you to customize the amount of water to be used within a single load. There is also a no-spin cycle option, which is perfect for clothing that you normally wash by hand. You will now be able to have the convenience of using your washing machine, even for your ultra-delicates. And the best part about this washer/dryer combo is the fact that it can easily fit under standard counters, making it perfect for RVs and apartments.

Featured Review (49): Frigidaire FEX831FS All-in-One Washer Dryer

by Karen Curley

Last year, I was in the market for an all-in-one washer/dry combo. My daughter was moving into a small apartment in Boston while she was in college, and I thought it would be nice to get her a washer-dryer. Fortunately, the apartment had a hook-up so that wouldn’t be a problem.

Frigidaire FEX831FS stacked laundry unitAfter much research, price comparison, and shopping the local home improvement stores, I found the Frigidaire, model #FEX831FS. It is the most economical all in one washer/dryer that I found. It is the perfect size for a small apartment or for a small family. It is a stacked washer dryer with the 2.7 Cu. Ft. washer on the bottom and the 5.7 Cu. Ft. dryer on the top. It fit nicely into the corner of my daughter’s kitchen, right next to the sink. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised at the good job it did washing and drying. The drying took a little longer than a larger, separate dryer, but it is much better than having to go out to the Laundromat lugging dirty laundry through the city.

The Frigidaire FEX831FS is $798.00 at Lowe’s Home Improvement Center, which I found to be the best value. I have seen this model for as much as $899.00 in other places. This economical price is half the cost of separate washer and dryer units. Buying this white, all-in-one stacked washer/dryer will actually save you money in the long run with the expense of washing and drying clothes at a Laundromat.

The washer unit of the FEX831FS washer/dryer is an extra large capacity. It has 8 wash cycles with hot/cold, cold/cold, and warm/cold rinse cycles. It also has a handy bleach dispenser to prevent bleach spots on your clothing and a self-cleaning filter.

The Frigidaire washer/dryer combo is energy efficient and uses less water than older, similar models. There is an extended warranty offered on the washer/dryer from two years to five years on top of the original one year warranty. The extended warranty will cost you an extra $29.99 to $99.99, depending on the length of time of the warranty.

The dryer has both automatic dry cycles and timed dry cycles with up to 100 minutes for timed drying. You can set the temperature for high or low heat, depending on the type of fabrics you are drying, and there is a cool down setting on the dryer also. A signal at the end of the dry time will let you know when the clothes are dry, so you can get them out before they wrinkle.

Read up on the FEX831FS Washer/Dryer Instructions, Installation Directions, and Operation Instructions before you make a decision to buy.

All in all, I would say that my daughter was very satisfied with this Frigidaire FEX831FS. It is still saving her time and money while she is in school, plus I don’t have to worry about her out in the city streets at night walking to and from the Laundromat. Its great value, quality, and space saving features make it the perfect choice for apartments, small spaces, single people, or small

Featured Review (48): LG WM3431 Front Load All-in-One Washer / Dryer Review

by C. Handana

The washing machine plays a vital role in everybody’s day to day life and choosing a machine that suits your lifestyle and does an excellent job in washing and drying clothes can be a great solution to most of the laundry problems. It’s been 3 months since we purchased our dream home and I was in search for an all in one washing machine which washes and dries, in other words an All-in-One Washer and Dryer that can fit in my new home.

LG-WM3431HW-combo washerI was in need of a machine which can operate without any external venting source, as our new home don’t have the outside venting; the delay start feature because being busy with my office work, I want to schedule my laundry in such a way that if I start the load, leave to office and when I return I want to see the load being completed without waiting to transfer the load from washer to the dryer; child lock feature as I do have my children and in addition I was particularlylooking for a machine that runs on 115V electricity which was standard for my new home.

I being busy with my office work could not afford to go to stores to look at the products. Being an internet savvy, I strongly believe that the sites sometimes give the best deals. So I started searching for a perfect washing machine combo that suits my life style. During my research I have come across the LG’s 24 inch WM3431 Front Load All-in-One Washer / Dryer model which comes in white and titanium colors, with all excellent features what I was looking for.

It is a ventless condensing All-in-one machine with total capacity of 2.44 Cu.Ft that runs on standard 115V with delay start and child lock features, with a warranty of 1 year on Parts & Labor, 2 Years on Control Board and 7 Years on Motor and Lifetime on the Drum. I was very much pleased with its 9 wash programs which are Sanitary, Cotton/Towels, Normal Permanent Press, Delicates, Wool/Silk, Hand Wash, Speed Wash, Drain & Spin; 5 Wash/Rinse Temperature levels which are Extra Hot/Cold, Hot/Cold, Warm/Warm, Warm/Cold, Cold/Cold; Flexibility of Wash to Dry, Wash Only or Dry Only and can delay wash up to 19 hours.

Without any delay, I ordered for it and it was shipped in right time when we were moving into our new home. We installed the 24 inch model in our closet and I am very much satisfied with it. It does an amazing job cleaning the clothes. And everytime whenever I leave for my work, I just throw in a load and set the timer to finish and by the time I return home, its done with clean and fresh clothes which are easy to sort and fold.

The clothes usually come out slightly damped but with the “dry only” setting option on the machine, I just pop the clothes back, give a quick shake or two and they are soon dry. The drying process takes longer time but it doesn’t matter to me. This Washer Dryer Combo is known for its energy and water efficiency and is EnergyStar rated as it uses less than half the detergent, less power as well as small amount of water to wash the clothes which is always an asset.

The price of this machine $1249 to $1500 depending on the site from where you buy. I bought this from livingdirect.com which is actually $1,499.00 with Free shipping but there were offering 15% off and luckily I got it for a discounted price of $1,274.15 with free shipping.

It’s sure is a one-of-a-kind machine equipped with all unique features and a space saver too!

Featured Review (47): LG All-In-One Steam Washer and Dryer Model WM3988HWA

There’s so many appliances to choose from when it comes to washers and dryers. Sometimes it’s easier to get an all-in-one. The convenience of a smaller machine saves space, especially for those in apartments. I have had the LG Washer and Dryer for just a short while as we just moved into a new house. Though we have plenty of space, our laundry room space is indeed limited. Our household decided on this appliance for convenience, for performance and for a cool look when stepping into the laundry room.

The LG All-In-One Steam Washer and Dryer is a single unit with many digital technologies. With new features being improved, the appliance is energy efficient when it comes to water. The washer and dryer is equipped with the SenseClean feature, which can automatically set the washing time and water level based on the weight and size of the load being washed.

LG WM3988HWA washer dryer combo all in oneThe digital settings also include a custom setting. You can customize the best wash cycle for your clothes by using the memory feature. Also featured is an allergen reducer that can be set into the digital memory. This helps reduce dust mites and animal dander in the wash cycles.

One feature I have never had on a washer and dryer is a Sanitary cycle. The washer turns the heat up in the water to near 160 degrees to help remove tough stains and ensures bacteria from dirty clothes are cleaned. This comes in handy for couples with children who may have brought home a sickness from school or other contractible infections. The clothes are all washed over a roller jet system with water being forced out like a sprinkler. This prevents clothes from snagging on a traditional setup, giving your clothes a gentler yet powerful cleaning.

What makes this unit unique is that the washing and drying cycles happen in the same place. There’s no need to load from one compartment to the next. When the wash cycle is finished, depending on how you programmed your wash, the dryer will begin to dry after the wash cycle. The dryer also has a sanitary option as well as the allergen cycle. There are only a few timed cycles and when drying clothes, it’s best not to overload the machine for efficient drying times.

We enjoy the LG All-In-One because when we’re running late in the morning for work, it’s easy to fluff clothes or remove wrinkles by tossing them in for a short 20 minute press cycle that cleans using steam and then presses wrinkles out.

The front loading system also is quiet. There are no belts involved as the motor directs power straight to the drum. This helps keep the machine balanced and reduces any extra noise that washers and dryers usually make.

The LG steam washer and dryer is however costly, costing near $2,000. It is worth every dollar spend however as the warranty from the manufacturer is quite impressive. The warranty covers one year on typical parts. The drum is covered for a lifetime and the motor that directs power is covered for 7 years. The digital control board is covered by the warranty for 2 years if anything were to go wrong. The combo only comes in white.

The LG Washer and Dryer combo can be purchased at Sears, Best Buy or directly from LG for roughly the same price.

Cash for Appliances Rebate Program

By the end of 2009, consumers nationwide will be able to take advantage of a federal “cash for appliances” program offering rebates on purchases of a wide array of home appliances certified as energy-efficient by the EPA’s Energy Star program.

Backed by an initial $300 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the state-run rebate program is intended to help make American homes more energy-efficient while further stimulating the economy.

“Appliances consume a huge amount of our electricity, so there’s enormous potential to both save energy and save families money every month,” said Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu in a press release. “These rebates will help families make the transition to more efficient appliances, making purchases that will directly stimulate the economy and create jobs.”

energy star logo largeStates will Run the Rebate Program
Each state will administer its own cash for appliances program. The states will be free to select which residential Energy Star qualified appliances to include in their programs and the individual rebate amount offered for each appliance.

What Can You Buy?
The Department of Energy (DOE) has recommended that the states focus their cash for appliances rebate efforts on heating and cooling equipment, appliances, and water heaters as these products offer the greatest energy savings potential. Energy Star qualified appliance categories eligible for rebates include: central air conditioners, heat pumps (air source and geothermal), boilers, furnaces (oil and gas), room air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, and water heaters.

How Big Will the Rebates Be?
While the states will be free to set actual rebate amounts based on their share of the $300 million, the Department of Energy expects the rebates to range from $50 to $200 per appliance. But wait, there’s more. Any rebates offered by state and local utility districts for purchases of energy-efficient appliances will be added to the federal cash for appliances rebate.

How do You Qualify?
All consumers will need to do to get the rebate is simply buy any qualifying Energy Star appliance. Unlike the “cash for clunkers” fuel-efficient vehicle rebate program, you don’t even need an old trade-in appliance. In addition, consumers will not be required to haul their bulky old appliances to the dealer in exchange for a new one.

When Does it Start?
The states will have until October 15, 2009 to submit their applications for funding and plans for recycling old appliances to the Department of Energy (DOE). The DOE plans to have distributed funding to the states by November 30. As a result, the cash for appliances rebates could be available in stores just in time for Christmas shopping.
