A Ventless Laundry Solution for Homes, RV’s and Boats
The Haier Ventless Washer / Dryer Combo HWD1000 is the simple and compact laundry solution for small spaces with no venting capabilities, making it the perfect companion for small homes, apartments, cabins, RVs, and boats. Plus this versatile Energy Star rated machine both washes and dries clothing in a single stainless steel tub! Simply choose from 7 Fabric Care Wash Cycles and 4 Dry Setting, and clothing is automatically washed then dried, with moisture condensed and released into your drain rather than through a hot vent. The specially-designed Ultra-Quiet construction of the HWD1000 ensures whisper-soft operation, and the automatic dispensers for detergent, fabric softener, and bleach release each product into the machine at just the right time so you don’t have to.
There are many advantages of the HWD1000. One is the power requirements are 115 Voltage~60Hz so it can work off the regular power socket. Another is the unit does not require external venting for the dryer. Hot vapors during the dry cycle are condensed into water and drained away. Also, the compact unit dimensions allow it to be built into a kitchen cabinet.
Key features include: auto select wash and rinse temperatures; water-saving rinse option; self-locking door; adjustable leveling legs; and a 1 year warranty. The Haier Ventless Washer / Dryer Combo HWD1000 is an elegant all-in-one solution for the vexing problems of limited space and lack of venting.
- Energy Star Rated : Save energy, money and the environment
- Ultra-Quiet Construction : Special construction limits moving parts and noise
- 110V Operation : Plugs into any standard household plug

Purchased this machine in early March 2010 for use in 16th floor condo with no venting area. I have found that it’s a useful, reliable machine that is a wonderful alternative to the laundromat. Keep in mind that it takes a long time but does exactly as advertised. This review is tailored to use as a PORTABLE MACHINE which means it is not hooked up like a regular washer. I hook it up when I need it and remove when I am not. I have no idea how it would work if it were used as a more permanent set-up which the instructions suggests is possible.
I use it about once or twice a week and do two to three loads each use. I had put castors but found that I didn’t like that it wasn’t sturdy enough during the spin cycles so I switched to those moving furniture/sliding pads under each corner and while it requires a little more effort to move, the machine is a lot sturdier when its not resting on wheels. I bought a lawn hose divider and a male/female converter I bought from lowes/home depot and hook the machine up to my bathroom sink since both cold and hot come from one faucet. The divider really only “tricks” the machine since the machine has a hot and cold water inlet. Therefore, if you want hot water, just turn on hot; cold, just turn on cold; warm, both. If you’re lucky enough to have two faucets, you won’t need the divider but may possibly need the male/female connectors. There are sites that will sell the “portability kits” with castors and the connectors for about $50-$70.00. I did not purchase those and figured I could get a better deal getting them individuallly at a place like Lowes or Home Depot. The castors and converters, I paid about $25.00 but it took a while because most people are not familiar with portability kits for washer/dryers. You may find that if you ask someone specifically for the connectors to hook a portable dishwasher, you’ll get looks of recognition and it’s the same thing. You will need two parts–I believe one is called the Snap nipple 27 dual thread dishwasher fitting and the other is the female part. They also come as a Snap coupling x 3/4″ male hose thread with built-in snap nipple 27-thread female set. When snapped together, it may leak a little into the sink, which is a tad annoying but that may be my fault or the sink’s fault or the coupling parts.
When I am not using it, I put it away in a nook in the bathroom. It’s bulky and while the measurements are accurate, the front loading door sticks out about half an inch beyond the manufacturer meaurements and there are side handles that also stick out about 3/4 of an inch and appear to be removable but I haven’t figured out how so plan for a little extra space. The output water hose, I just stick it in the sink and put a lint trap over the drain because lots of lint comes out. The first couple times I drained it into the tub without a lint trap, I noticed I had to clean out the drain with (aha!) lint so preventative is better than clogging the tub.
I’ve found that HE detergent (while slightly more expensive) is the best type of detergent to use and my clothes come out clean and fresh. I had used regular powder detergent and found that the water didn’t get soapy enough to get the clothes clean. It only takes a little detergent. I fill the drum about 3/4 of the way for the wash and find that this way there’s enough air space for the dryer to dry sufficiently. If the machine is too full during the dryer phase, it won’t dry sufficiently. If you have the option of air-drying after the wash cycle, filling the entire drum is not a problem at all. With my loads, I try not to stick in more than 2-3 thick items such as jeans and towels when I plan on using the dry cycle. I find I have found the most success drying when I wash “regular” thickness items like underwear, and socks and one towel and/or one pair of jeans.
The instructions booklet is HORRIBLE and vague. When I purchased the machine, I read a lot of negative reviews and was worried it would poop out on me and not wash/dry suficiently. As for the wash part, keep the desired temperature of your wash portion on the entire time of your wash. The machine will suck in water when it needs it. I use the shortest cycle with one wash cycle and the clothes come out clean. The spin cycle is mostly fine and has a 600-1000 rpm option. HOWEVER, depending on the length of your cycle and the rpm you’ve chosen, the last 5-10 minutes can be REALLY LOUD. I’ve found the 600 does not spin the water out sufficiently enough but 800 rpm is only really loud for about 2-3 minutes. I always set the drying function from the washing function separately instead of setting it all at the beginning. There’s no real reason for doing this–sometimes I want to remove something between cycles and want an opportunity to do so.
If you are going to use it as a portable machine instead of a more permanent hook-up, YOU NEED TO KEEP THE COLD WATER RUNNING DURING THE DRY CYCLE!!!!! The first time I used the machine, I failed to do this and it would not dry. There are about two other reviews online that mention this and I decided to give it a try. However, ever since then, while the dry cycle is long (it’s advertised this way), my clothes (even towels and jeans) come out dry and hot when the cold water is left on during the dry cycle.
The machine does not use very much water but you can change the water setting depending on how dirty the clothes are. I am not certain if it uses a lot of electricity as my electricity is included in my condo fees. It’s 115 so I imagine it does not.
I have noticed that if you are doing more than 2 loads of washing AND drying, by the third dry cycle, the machine shuts off about half way during the third dry cycle because I think it detects near overheat. This may be something wrong with the machine or a safety feature–I am not sure but the machine does get very hot after that many cycles. That’s basically 6-7 hours of continuous operation so be careful.
It’s a great machine for 1-2 people. You can’t expect too much from it like washing 3 pairs of jeans and 2 towels. You have to pick and choose the types of things you wash with each load. It can wash/dry everything but you have to balance out thickness.
Overall, I got a good deal on it at an appliance site online. I paid approx. $600, shipping and tax inclusive. It has made my life more convenient and while it takes time and has quirks, this is a LOT better than quarters and laundromat.
I live in a condo that has no laundry room, and I am too lazy and cheap to go down stairs to the laundry room. This machine was the answer to my problem by being able to fit into a small closet and plug into a standard 110v outlet. I had to do the plumbing myself and have a friend to do the electric to allow it work, but that is another story. The only problem is that because it is only 110v and ventless, so the drying cycle does not completely dry the clothes all of the time and can leave clothes a little wrinkled if clothes are not removed in time. All in all, for my situation it is perfect, but if you have room for a full size washer and dryer go for that instead.
I researched the heck out of this appliance and the drying technology before I purchased it so I knew what I was getting. This machine is dream come true for a condo owner or apartment renter with no washer hook-ups or dryer venting. So that others can benefit from my research I thought I would put together a pro and con list.
Pros:
Washer and dryer in my condo!
Lots of programming functions
Ability to schedule ahead washing and drying (see explanation below)
A night-time mode
Delicately washes and dries your clothes
Perfect for a single person or couple
Con:
Time it takes to dry (see explanation below)
Small load capacity
Time it takes to dry
On other review sites people mention the time it takes to dry. When you are buying this type of washer/dryer it is a function of the technology not the brand. There are many brands out there that offer ventless drying, LG, Bosch, Haier, etc. They all take lots of time to dry. Obviously I wouldn’t be purchasing this type of appliance if I had a way to vent my dryer. But, these types of dryers are my only option. If you like to hang dry a lot of your clothes, like I do, it works. Also, I do have access, down the hall, to a regular washer and dryer for large loads and towels but it is nice having something in my unit for my everyday clothes.
For perma press clothing it takes about an hour to dry and the standard wash is an hour. For cottons it takes about two hours to dry and 1 hour to wash. You can also do a quick wash 30 minutes and you can do a quick dry.
Scheduled washing and drying
A great function of this machine is the ability to schedule a time to wash and dry. For example you can start the machine before you go to bed and your clothes will be dry when you wake up. Or, set it to wash and dry while you are at work. This function compensates for the long time that it takes to dry.
Manufacturer
Try not to go through the manufacturer for problems. Go to your online retailer first. Do your research on not only this unit but the manufacturer and how they deal with warrantly repairs.
I received mine via freight just like others described but no problem I simply called some friends to help me bring it to my apartment (we have no elevator) and t was mission accomplished. Before I ordered this product I already did significant research online, from all the reviews I read I was honestly expecting the installation process to be long and complicated but much to my surprise the opposite was true… the machine practically was ready out of the box. All that was required was to remove a tension bar and 3 bolts in the rear of the machine which I understood were all parts that protected the machine during shipping.Unlike other users I decided to install the water inlet hoses at the base of my spare bathroom sink using a bypass valve, 1 adapter and an 1 sink hose for hot and cold respectively (purchased at my local hardware store for a few bucks) The drain hose I fed into my shower drain (mind you this is a spare bathroom that no one uses the shower…also its a temporary location as I build is future home in a closet I’m converting into a washroom) My first mistake was connecting the washer to an outlet with one of those “test” and “reset” buttons as it kept tuning off the dryer 30 minutes into a cycle..this was easily corrected via use of a surge protector on another near by outlet (all rated for 15A also fuse at fuse box rated 15Amps too) My Second mistake was feeding ‘too’ much tubing into the shower drain…this caused the water not to properly but was easily solved by using both hose hangers on the back of the machine as opposed to the ‘one’ I used.Once I worked past those kinks the machine works amazingly for a machine of its size and for 110watts! I do wash loads that i would consider ‘small’ or ‘almost regular’ loads for a standard washer *but* the amount of softener and liquid detergent (for HE washers only!!!) are equally less (I practically use a ‘spit’ amount of softener {mostly for personal preference…I noticed the first time i washed with the “softener manufactures recommended amount for a small load” the fragrance was overpowering and left some of my jeans feeling silky…so i decided to go with slightly less than half of the above mentioned amount}***All in all, I saw a homemade youtube video where someone recommended “Never” filling these side loaders more than half way…so I eyeball it and follow that rule too for good evenly washed clothesDrying… The first time you see your little washer go into drying mode you’re probably going to think the same thing i did “Isn’t it suppose to tumble more often?…Is it broken? O_o” lol Don’t worry, its not broken…it’ll make noises, swooshing sounds and other drying related sounds but it all part of the vent-less drying feature. This was my biggest concern on purchasing an item like this (combo vent-less washer n dryer) at first I was “Very” skeptical on its drying capabilities (reading countless reviews and seeing home made web videos on comparable manufacture models drying a “single” pant took this guy upwards of 6 hours O_o) Happily my fears were put to rest, In my experience of washing *both* men and women’s clothing plus towels I noticed drying times of 1:30 hours, with a break at the first 30 minutes leaving the door wide open so the heat and humidity could vent out. The only time I had to go over was this one time I was washing 3 jeans: 1 men’s wide leg baggy jeans and 2 women blue jeans where my drying time was 2 hoursAll in all its a great machine! Please do take the time to look over the manual especially if you’ve never owned a side loader before. I found some part of the manual a little difficult to understand, nothing a little bit of internet research and video sites like youtube couldn’t fix.
I bought this for my wife and I to use in our condo. A few simple directions would have saved us many hours of research. Here is a few tips and tricks to make this thing work well:- You MUST keep the COLD water on during drying!- Little amount of HE Soap goes a very long way- Less is more when loading the washer – half of what you think is okayI custom set our wash cycle for:12 wash, 2 rise, 10K RPMS, and standard drying – 2:35 minsI like the auto shut off feature – some times it leaves the items a bit damp but I guess this is a feature and not a defect… better for the items – longer life.We also have a portable set-up. Go to – they have wheels and hook-ups for about $30.00. And one last thing… dame it is heavy. Get some people to help you move the box into the house… 215 lbs. Oh and yes… great price at this site. Free shipping when you call customer service and ask for it.Hope this review helps.
I would rate this unit 100% across the board except for one thing. So far I have ran three loads through. From a couple dish rags and a towel up to full bedding at once and when it goes into spine cycle it wants to jump off the floor. I have shut off ( have to wait 3 minutes to open door ) and rearranged the cloths and it still does it. I am not talking about a slight vibration I am talking about it wants to come out of the cabinet. I had one built by Splendide and it would vibrate a little but not like this. If it was not for that I would be 100% pleased.
Its small, you need to remember that, People review that there are problems drying. they are overloading it. I am a poor man and saved for 3 years to buy this. I’d buy the same thing again.I bet it dont use 4 gallons of water, it has options that I’ve never seen, Its so so quiet If I didnt hear the water going in and out I would not hear it. At first I thought I got riped then made the loads smaller and Its perfect. I live on a boat and have limited space. In the years it took to purchase I read review after review, there is another that has bad reviews, but looks the same, its usually cheeper so beware. If I could afford it,I thought to get a small dryer, but if I could afford it I’d gae a second washer/drier I would say though if you could afford a stackable it might be better , but make sure its a heavy duty cause I worked in an apt. building and they are cheep.BUY IY!!!
I’m a bachelor, so it is the perfect unit for me. I also own a regular GE dryer, so I can wash and dry at the same time. This thing runs soft, smooth, and quiet. And it is easy on your clothes. You should only have a couple of items in order to get the full use of the dryer. Too many clothes will not dry the way you would like. If you are like me and do a little at a time and keep up on your laundry, I would buy one. If you like to make a career out of your laundry day and wait a month to do laundry, then I suggest going to a laundromat that has heavy duty machines. If you use common sense and you are not a complete moron, then this Haier is the best thing since sliced bread. Besides, now you can do laundry like Shaq
Timer – When the timer is set to 30 mins., the drying does not countdown to zero. It gets stuck at “01″ mins. Set at 30 mins. the timer ran for 1h48m before I stopped the machine.
Dry – selecting Standard Dry, drops the wash water level to mid-level.
Water level set to low will not properly wash 2 lbs. laundry. Barely gets it wet.
Noise – due to the condensing drying method, the pump has to periodically attempt to pump out the little bit of water the reservoir has collected. So this pump cycles on & off for 10 -15 seconds about once every 90 seconds for however many hours it takes to dry something. One bath towel – cannot spin dry – unbalanced load (Error U03 “spin lopsidedly”) — appears to be no way to re-balance it, except to add another towel. Three bath towels (3.1 lbs) wouldn’t dry after several 30 and 60-minute runs totalling about 3 hours. Ladies tops dried faster by hanging up inside at room temperature. All clothing repeatedly came out steaming, but wet. This is a way to make doing laundry an all-day project.
Detergent/softener partitions – directions appear flat out wrong. No labeling of which partition is which, and no key in Owner’s Guide. Counterintuitive. For example, Pre-wash flushes the right-hand partition only for the final rinse, so: where to put detergent? In the left side partition!? Noise (again) – There is a loud periodic vibration or low frequency buzzing every 30 – 60 seconds during very slow spin of (three) towels. Tabular chart on p. 15 of Guide is completely wrong. Detergent being added to fabric softener partition. There are other annoyances, too many (and boring) to list here. I cannot get three or four towels to spin at 1000 rpm to get the extra water out that they naturally will carry. Just where I need it most the high-speed spin is not available. Principal value of this appliance — appears to be its compactness, which is most excellent. However, the mission is clean wearable clothes, not clean wet clothes, and not steamed fabrics that are still wet. The condensing dryer method is highly dependent upon the temperature differential between the interior drum and the exterior (condensing) one. This might work well in an environment where the ambient indoor temperature is 50 – 60 deg-F, such as in some places in Asia where my relatives visited, where indoor heat is very minimal. It is hard to believe that this is an Energy Star (or similar) appliance. I might recommend this, but with great caution, and having to admit that some people don’t mind continuous laundry operation in their kitchen, e.g
We have tried to use this unit several times and have been disappointed with it’s drying capabilities. It is a great washer but you’d be better off drying the clothes by hand.
Had it just about a year now and it’s still running like a champ. It’s small, quiet and easy to use. It took 2 friends and myself to get it up the stairs and a pizza bribe to have one friend hang around and help decode the poorly translated set-up manual.
I use it for basically everything. It has all kinds of warnings about not putting anything rubber in it so I haven’t even gone there. With mine I have to make sure the door is FIRMLY closed before it will start. Three annoying beeps let’s you know if it’s not securely closed. I turn it on at night and it’s never disturbed my sleep. It can get a little shakey at the higher rpm settings but the leveling legs help with that.
Once I figured out where to add the required powder HE (High Efficiency) soap in the counter intuitively labeled trays I was up and never lookin’ back. I like it and would buy another.
(Insider tip) Keep a close eye on this site for great deals around the holidays. Last year I landed a pretty smokin’ deal on this washer/dryer and hopefully you will too.
I don’t have a problem agreeing with the previous reviews.
Just be sure to carefully read all the documentation that comes with it.
So far it’s been great!
I LOVE this machine! My apartment is less than 1000 square feet. Although I have hook ups for a washing machine, a full size washer would not fit and there is no venting available for a dryer. This fits perfectly! I ended up putting the machine in my kitchen. The portability kit is wonderful! The casters from the kit replaced the adjustable legs on the machine and I can practically move the machine with one hand. I love the convenience! No more laundry mat! No more going up and down stairs to the shared laundry room in my building!
I purchased this product due to limited space in my apartment (and no hook ups!) This machine runs effectively on 110v (standard outlet) and with a faucet adapter. Had a few minor leaks at first around the water connection to the machine, easily cleaned up with one hand towel. Machine WILL NOT dry a full load in a timely manner due to the limited power supply (110v) however the loads are perfect sized to fit on one drying rack. I usually run one drying cycle for 60 minutes, then line dry for 15-20 and they are ready to be put away. However with sink hook ups, you must be present during the entire wash program to turn the water on/off for washing and rinsing, otherwise the sink adapter will leak (steady stream- lots of wasted water!) but no need to sit by the machine. When it can’t acquire a water supply, after 5 minutes it will beep and display error code E11, just press Start and turn on the water. Easy to get things done around the house and listen for it. Overall I’m very satisfied with the purchase.
I use the machine to do my daily wash. It is great not to have to go to the expensive, and sometimes dirty, public laundromats. Overall, it is a convenient timesaver.
It is very compact and fits perfectly in my condo where space is at a premium. It washes and cleans well and operates quietly. It met all my expectations. Using extension hoses and faucet adaptor and “y” valve (not included) and the supplied footrests were most practical for me. Using single wheel locking casters caused instability.
Drying was as expected. It takes longer than conventional machines and may require more than one cycle to get clothes completely dry. It drys light clothes (t-shirts, socks, etc…)well, but bathtowels and sweaters and jeans are best hung to dry after one cycle. I did not find wrinkling to be a problem.
I like this product. It does what it is supposed to do given its limitations.
Bought this machine for my small laundry room off the bathroom in my apartment, and it’s great. It’s so convenient to put dirty clothes in, take clean, dry clothes out, and not having to do any special wiring – just plug it into the standard wall outlet and go.
I did plenty of research before settling on this model, and the one thing that I didn’t find in my research was the fact that the dryer capacity is about half the washing capacity (it can wash 11lbs or so, but can only effectively dry 6lbs). If you wash the full 11lbs, it will dry – eventually – you just need to run it through the dry cycle more than once. You could also pay attention and remove half of the wet laundry, I suppose, but that defeats the purpose of having an all in one machine. Easiest solution is to do smaller loads in the first place.
Another feature that I love, though I have yet to use it, is the fact that this machine can be hooked up to the sink, so if I move to another apartment without a washer/dryer hookup, between the ability to hook it up to the sink and the fact that there is no special wiring required, we’ll be all set – a big plus!
The raelly good thing about this washer is I can load it set it and go to bed, when I get up the clothes are clean and dry.If I could get it to fold them that would be grand.
FIRST AND FOREMOST! The manual SUCKS! Badly written, and as full of typos as it’s devoid of information.
I wheel the machine from a closet where it is stored and attach it to the kitchen faucet. It’s heavy and the casters, too light for the machine, are difficult to maneuver.
I have tried to use it for all my laundry, but a load of towels or sheets(6 lbs when dry)sent the machine rocking and rolling all over the kitchen during the spin cycle damaging the linoleum.
The tech told me that the weight limits apply to WET laundry, not DRY, so the towels probably weighed way too much for the machine to handle.
The tech also told me that you should NEVER use a front loader on an upper floor. Any machine will shake! You need a top loader!
These are things that NO ONE bothers to tells you!
So while it’s nice to be able to wash my underclothes and a few other things without having to go to the launderette, it certainly is not a solution for all the laundry. I am alone, so it will help me. THIS IS NOT FOR MORE THAN ONE PERSON
We got this for a christmas gift. We live in a condo that was not equipped with waher dryer inputs. By the time we installed the pipes and electric it was at the end of January. The machine worked for 2 loads and an error 31 came up on the machine. That means contact the tech. We did. A tech came and said oh there is a loose wire so he said he fixed it. We did 2 more loads and the same thing happend. We called back. Two weeks later the tech came back and he told us last min. that he cant do anything unless he sees the error 31. It takes over an hour for that to show up and then told us that if it doesn’t come on while he was there then he would have to charge us $150. He stayed for 10 min then an hour passes and it breaks again. He orderd parts that was on Feb 25th .. Now it is April 19th and we still havent recieved the parts. I have called compact appl. and they will not give me a new machine or give me my money back.. They sold us a broken machine and the warranty was also bought and they still will not help out. The machine fits perfect in our condo but we it doesn’t work. The water also shoots out of the soap dispenser and when I told that to customer service they said oh that is easy for us to fix.. Still waiting. We have been waiting since the end of January to have this fixed and no one is helping us out at all.. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY AT ALL. DO NOT BUY AN HAIER. Haier would not even help.
When I purchased this product I was so excited because I thought wow! I don’t have to get a washer and dryer separately and it can fit in any space in my kitchen. The washer works great but when It so-called dried the clothes, they wasn’t dried when I removed them after the machine stopped. So I put them back into the machine to dry and when it finished the clothes still wasn’t dried, they were still damp. I am very dissappointed with my little machine and wish I could have returned it but I know it would have been too much trouble. I will be selling it and looking to purchase stackable washer/dryer soon
Great RV unit. The ventless dry takes some getting used to and does add quite a bit of time to the drying. But all n all a great product especially for the sale price.
Again be very careful not to overload the unit or things will not dry.
Perfect for the full-time RV’er.
Machine broke two days after delivery. That was over a month ago, and Haier has yet to repair or replace it. Customer service has been flaky, rude and ignorant about product. Buying this machine was a huge mistake- not worth the money or the angst. STAY AWAY
