The LG Combination Washer Dryer is Perfect for Small, Ventless Living Spaces

This LG combination washer dryer (model: WM3431HW) features some of the most advanced technology available in washer dryer combo units. Only 2 feet in width, the WM3431HW saves floor space while utilizing ventless drying and nine (9) tailored wash programs. The LG WM3431HW combination washer & dryer is truly the perfect unit for apartments, condos and other living spaces lacking typical washer dryer connections. This model also consumes less power than other washing machines (uses 120V, 60Hz, 10 Amps).

What does the LG WM3431HW offer that sets it apart from the rest?

  • Highly Energy Efficient Combination Washer Dryer:

The LG WM3431HW combo washer dryer is EnergyStar rated and achieved CEE Tier 3B for energy efficiency! Although combo washer dryers are generally more energy efficient than standard washers and dryers, this unit is particularly notable for its energy and water efficiency.

  • Large Cubic Foot Capacity:

The LG WM3431HW combo washer dryer offers a large 2.11 cubic foot drum (which has the same capacity as a 2.44 cubic foot top loading drum, due to the “wasted space” of the agitator in a top loader), with greater than 15 pounds of wash capacity. This is on par with the largest capacity 24″ wide washer dryers available today.

  • Minimal Ambient Noise:

The LG WM3431HW combo washer dryer also features a direct drive drum. The direct drive drum minimizes the noise and vibration that other washer dryer combos can produce.

  • Internal Heat Booster:

The LG WM3431HW combination washer dryer also features an internal water heat booster to add more heat to your hot water line which provides for highly sanitized laundry.

Recently, the dryer that my husband and I have been using for the past year broke, and believe me; it was not convenient when it did. After much deliberation and about twice as much shopping, he and I decided to settle on the LG WM3431 Washer/Dryer Combo. This seemed like the wisest move for us as we’re not quite sure what the future holds for us as far as living situations go, and as we may (but hopefully will not) end up in an apartment without a washer/dryer hookup someday, this seemed like the smartest choice for us.

With just the two of us in our family, we don’t do a lot of laundry, so it seemed pointless to spend money on any of the newer washer and dryer models out there. We don’t have a large family, so having large clothes-washing equipment that would unnecessarily be taking up space seemed silly. We looked into what our options at that point were, and we found out that washers and dryers were available that did not require a washer/dryer hookup. Both of us being reviewers, we looked into each washer/dryer that did not require such a hookup, and we mainly found tons of reviews of people bashing the products. I was about ready to give up altogether on ever finding the right washer/dryer for us, but he was diligent in his research, and so we found the LG WM3431 Washer/Dryer and almost immediately purchased it. Not only did we purchase it, but we love it too!

The machine fits nicely into almost any small space and does not take up nearly the amount of room that almost any other washer/dryer setup on the market would. Additionally, the Washer/Dryer plugs right into any three-prong outlet and the hose from which water is dispensed may be dumped into any drain (including the kitchen and/or bathroom sink!). The amount of water that is pushed through the drains is not too much for even the smallest sink or drain to hold, and so it will not overflow one’s home with water! The drying function on the machine does not require any sort of vent or outdoor outlet. It also nicely helps to heat one’s home without making it overwhelmingly hot or pumping dryer dust or air all over the house.

The Washer/Dryer comes in either white or titanium, and both have stainless steel door frames that surround the glass window at the front of the machine. The machine is a compact unit that measures twenty-four inches wide, thirty-three-and-a-half inches tall and twenty-five inches deep. The Washer/Dryer features a main settings dial, an assortment of pushable buttons, and a digital screen that is featured on the control panel. On this panel is a timer which allows one to load their laundry as well as detergent before they leave their home and to have the machine start running and complete its cycle just in time for when they arrive home again. This wonderful timer can be set for up to nineteen hours later! Additionally, because this machine is a two-in-one, one need not worry that their clothes will be sitting there wet; growing mildew, as they will immediately begin drying after the wash cycle is completed! This is really one of the most incredible products that I have ever owned!
In order to keep with our current décor and the décor we hope to have in any of our future homes, my husband and I went with the titanium version of the machine, and it very much compliments our home.

As far as effectiveness goes, clothes definitely get clean in this machine! The wash cycle agitates incredibly, so there can be no doubt whatsoever that clothes are being cleaned successfully. Additionally, clothes seem to dry faster as well. There is also a sanitary cycle that helps to clean clothes with incredibly hot water. I use this cycle to keep my white clothes incredibly white, to keep my dog and cat toys super-clean, and to wash anything that may have been badly soiled by the animals such as their pet beds.

However, I am careful when putting large items or potentially heavy items into the machine (such as pet beds) as the machine does seem to have problems with balancing itself. Carefully loading laundry into the machine perfectly is necessary, be careful to be sure that the load is balanced throughout! When the machine is unbalanced, it will continuously reset and try to balance the load, which is inconvenient. Normally the machine does a good job of re-balancing itself, and I have only ever had to re-balance it by re-arranging the contents myself a few times. There are some vibrations that come from the machine, and while I know that some have complained that these are fairly violent, I have had no such problems. Our Washer/Dryer sits directly on the floor, completely flat, and we have only had it vibrate uncontrollably when there were loads being washed that were not balanced. In addition, the machine does not emit much in the way of noise. Perhaps we just got lucky, as again, I have read that others have had problems with the machine being loud, but the one that we purchased is rather silent. Of course, any washer/dryer will make noise as it is going through its cycles, but this one makes no more noise than any other one that I have used and/or encountered.

Overall, I adore this machine. My clothes always come out of it perfectly washed and dried, more often than not, warm to the touch. I’ve had other washer and dryers in the past, and for a small family of two, it makes perfect sense to own the LG WM3431 as we don’t do nearly as much in the way of laundry as a larger family would. This new Washer/Dryer was a great solution to our problem, and can be taken with us to wherever we move to next. I most certainly recommend this machine to any small family that is simply looking for a quick, effective, space-saving way to do laundry.

My wife and I live on a boat in Alaska. I have had this washer/dryer unit for over 1 year now and use this to do all our laundry. Im very pleased. The drying isnt as fast as a standard dryer, but works great if you follow a few simple tricks and realize it’s a different type of dryer. Im writing a review here b/c I used this site when deciding to purchase this unit. OK, our unit is the ventless one. I set the wash typically on “normal” mode and the dryer for timed 1hr. After the 1 hr, I take out the socks and undies and thinner stuff that is dry. The unit steams the clothes dry. At first, everything feels damp when you first take them out. I fluff the steam out of each garment. What first felt damp when initially taken out, often feels dry after a quick 5 second fluff to get the steam out. The heavier things like towels and jeans get put back in after their fluffing for another 1.5hrs. I understand how some people view this as a pain, but it sure as hell beats going to a laundry mat. And there isnt a public laundry facility for 250 miles from where my boat is! So, yeah, it works great. The clothes are very clean and I dont really mind having the extra hassle with the drying. It definitely beats the laundry mat! I highly recommend this unit for a situation where a standard washer and dryer isnt an option. Im very pleased. Just realize all the stuff will feel damp the first 5 seconds, but after a quick fluff, presto, it’s dry. And whatever isnt dry, just goes back in for a bit.

Many of the complaints against this model have to do with it failing to dry properly after some period of use. How long it takes for this problem to appear depends on how much use and what type of items are washed. Frequent washing of throw rugs and things that “shed” a lot of lint (like heavy towels) will make it happen sooner. Also if you use too much (or the wrong kind) of detergent. Use only high efficiency detergent and (at least in my experience) not more than a tablespoon of it. Some lightly soiled loads might only need a teaspoon. Too much detergent makes the lint “sticky” and it will cling to the air circulating chamber more easily.
I’ve put together a DIY page on an easy (1 hour) steps to clean out the air circulating chamber inside this unit. I do this to my unit about once a year. Here’s the link: http://mysite.verizon.net/vze2bsrc/lgventless/index.html

Having said all that, I still love this appliance. It’s cheap to operate (less than $20/year in electricity) and doesn’t dry my laundry by cooking it with intense dry heat.
The drum is a bit small so you can’t pack it full of clothes or they won’t dry properly (or you’ll get wrinkled clothes).

    4. Memphis says:

I bought the LG WM3431HW ventless W/D to replace an Equator EZ3720CEE that hardly cleaned clothes and never fully dried them (they usually came out very, very damp after several hours of drying). I’ve had the LG for about a year and a half now and it still runs beautifully. Clothes are clean, and (believe it or not with a ventless dryer) dry when they come out.

While there are some cons (limited capacity – meaning more frequent loads, fairly loud operation – which can be mitigated by running the machine while away from home, and of course the long cycle time – usually about 4 hours to do a load), there are a lot of plusses for this machine. It’s very compact, and so great for someone with limited space. It has very easy controls, and a delay timer that allows you to set the wash to start up to several hours later. (I use this function all of the time by setting the wash to begin 4 hours after I leave for work, and so when I return, the clothes are ready.) For a ventless W/D, it manages to fully dry clothes, which is not what I’ve seen nor heard about other models that usually leave clothes fairly damp. Finally, as it is powered with a standard 110 V plug, it doesn’t use as much energy as a standard dryer using 220 V, so it is rather cost effective to run (even with the longer cycle time).

So, if you are looking for one of these units because of space limitations, or if you live in a place not designed for dryer ventilation, I highly recommend the LG. Yes, it’s more expensive than the others, but in this case you get what you pay for

    5. Shawnee says:

I just got my machine the first of this week, and have been running it almost non-stop. I LOVE IT! We had recently moved to a new apartment with no washer/dryer connections. Having used laundry room facilities before and ruined clothes, I felt this would be the best option for me. I read ALL the reviews before purchasing this machine and highly recommend anyone thinking of purchasing do the same. I found many of the suggestions helpful. It is only my husband and I so the small load size works fine for us. I use mostly the perm press or delicate wash and take the wet clothes out, shake them, replace in machine, then set to low temp to dry. To wash our king size sheets I can only wash one sheet and pillowcase per load, but it only takes about 3 hours for each load that way taking a total of 6 hours for sheets. The clothing loads have varied from 5-6 hours depending on what is in the load. Heavier items, like sweats and jeans take longer to dry. Some clothes are a bit wrinkled when they come out of the dryer, but I don’t think they’re anymore wrinkled than when I used my old regular dryer. My t-shirts and sweaters come out virtually wrinkle free. Ironically, it is the perm press items that seem to hold the most wrinkles. :) As far as noise, my dishwasher is noisier than this machine. As far as vibration, I have only used medium spin so far, and the vibration is no more than a regular washer. We had to place our machine at the end of the kitchen counter in the dining area on carpet. We got a piece of 3/4″ plywood to set the machine on allowing a couple of inches on all sides for “walking” room. On medium spin the machine has not “walked” at all. We also ordered the rubber boots and got them today so as to reduce vibration when we need to use the higher spin speeds. So far nothing has jiggled on the walls or even bounced off the top of the machine during use. We also live on the second floor. If your expectations are not unrealistic and you are a one or two person family, I’d say this is the perfect solution for your laundry needs. Should we move where there are washer/dryer connections, I plan to keep this machine simply because my clothes are cleaner than when I used my traditional washer/dryer. It only uses two tablespoons of HE liquid detergent per load making it economical to use in every way.

    6. Auntie says:

Added to Master Bedroom and what a treat. No need to go to basement for normal wash loads. It has many wash/dry options, perfect!

    7. Flo says:

I just got my unit yesterday and have washed several loads already. I had a different brand washer dryer combo before this one and I have to say there is NO comparison. I have been SO pleasantly surprised by this one ! I would have 2 t-shirts, socks and 1 pr. of shorts in the other brand , dry for 2 hours and take them out wet. I would hang them to finish drying. This unit dried 3 pair of denim shorts and socks in half the time and they were DRY. I never had a ” dry” load with the other brand.

The first load I did, I was concerned with the machine vibrating so much during the spin cycle. I chatted online with one of the help crew and the first question he asked was,, did we remove the 4 shipping bolts that are on the back of the machine… Well, no, we hadn’t. So by simply taking them out, it helped tremendously. We also, just for a little added stability placed a piece of dense foam under each leg. Now it doesn’t vibrate nothing like it did.

It uses very little water and the clothes are very clean when they come out.

If this unit continues to do this good, I would highly recomend this to anyone who has a small space and can not use a regular washer and dryer

    8. Angel says:

I’ve only had this machine for about 2 months and I’ve only been able to use it for about a week.

I live on the second floor of an old building in Los Angeles and when we installed it under a table in our kitchen the spin cycle shook the building so bad that our neighbors complained and the people below us had their hanging lamp fall off their ceiling. Not good since we are trying to keep anyone from knowing we have it.

We played with the settings A LOT because there are a ton of them, and found even on the lowest spin cycle that it shook too bad. So after doing a ton of research I bought these vibraton pads from Kettle Ent. that came highly recommended [...] They helped enought to let us use the delicate cycle. The engineer at Kettle was great he gave us lots of suggestions and once we moved the washer to a more stable (a hallway with 3 supporting doorways to stabalize the floor better) if less convenient place we were able to run the machine on medium spin. We tried Extra High which is amazing since the laundry comes out almost dry, but Medium is the best we can get without complaints.

      Settings:

Since I’ve played with the settings a lot let me talk about them. This machine is expensive, but the settings are worth it. I love Sanitary mode. It takes a long time to wash and dry (about 3:20) but everything is SUPER CLEAN.

My one major beef with the control on the settings is that many of the settings are limited in their options. For example if you want to wash on Normal and have it go automatically into dry mode you have to spin on High or Very High. Since I can only spin on Medium this is a pain in the butt. I have to wait for the machine to shut off and then set it to dry only.

My other beef is that all the settings allow you to set the spin on Low, but ONLY DELICATE cycle drains on Low (Low leaves items sopping wet BTW). Before I got the vibration pads and had to spin on Low I could only wash on Delicate otherwise it would spin the drain cycle on High and then spin the end spin cycle on Low.

Aside from those two things the settings are great. Lots of options and very powerful control over your laundry.

      Size and Set up:

Size is great. It does do small loads and takes a lot longer to dry, but this is so with all portable units and dual units that are ventless.

Set up was pretty easy once we spent an hour at Lowes looking for the right adapter. You need a Y adapter and probably a standard sink adapter for the Y adapter to attach to. We also had to get longer hoses. It only comes with puney 5ft houses. We bought 6ft ones to reach our bathroom sink from the hall and then an extender for the drain hose. But we spent like $6 on the adapters so you may want to skip the ones they sell on this site….

      Balance Loads:

You must put the laundry into the machine with care. If the load is off balance it will auto adjut, but this can take forever as it spins one way and then the other trying to toss the items into a better space. Just put the items in thoughtfully instead of shoving them in and you won’t have this problem.

      Drying:

THE DRAIN HOSE MUST BE IN THE SINK ON DRY MODE. So the way this machine works is with water. So it drains water even while drying.

I recommend you just use cold water from the tap. To dry you can only use cold water and since the machine has its own water heater you might as well not risk forgetting to switch the tap from hot to cold for the drying cycles.

This machine has an auto sensor and all my laundry is usually dry. It feels wet when it first comes out, but once it cools down it’s dry. If the machine is overfull items will not dry. If I am doing heavy loads like towels or jeans I make the load even smaller. Think about weight with this machine opposed to how full it is.

There is an auto lock on the machine door for your protection. It’s annoying. You have to wait at leat 5 minutes after the cycle dings at you before you can open the door which is not only annoying but a beeach if you are like me and forget that your laundry is still waiting in the machine 5 minutes later when the door DOES allow you to open it. There really should be a ding only when you can open the machine!

I think thats about it so far. I’ll keep everyone posted if I learn mor

    9. JosephNY says:

My wife and I live in a small one-bedroom apartment. Tired of going to the laundromat, we looked for combination washer/dryer units. The off-brand Chinese units sold at other retailers frankly scared me, and I settled on this LG unit after reading several reviews.

We’ve had it for a few weeks and are quite happy with it.

First off, I was able to install it without tapping into the apartment’s plumbing. In particular, I hooked it up to the faucet using: 1) a 15/16″ faucet aerator thread to 3/4″ garden hose adapter; 2) a 6′ washer hose with 3/4″ garden hose connectors at both ends; 3) a female-female 3/4″ garden hose adapter; 4) a Y-connector with one male and two female 3/4″ garden hose connectors; 5) the included hoses with the units. The additional hardware cost under $40 at the local hardware store.

As for how it works, it does take a long time: 3-4 hours is not uncommon to wash and dry a single load. However, this isn’t a problem, as loads don’t need to be switched between separate washer and dryer units, and because the unit is in my own apartment! No longer does my wife or I have to waste several hours sitting around reading a magazine at the laundromat. Vibration and noise are largely unobjectionable, and clothes come out clean. Sometimes they do need an additional run in the dryer, and if left in while moist they can get very wrinkled.

Overall I very much like this unit, and would make the same purchase again

    10. CJulieth says:

I am not one to get EASILY excited over new purchases, but this machine has made me so HAPPY! I think with reasonable expectations, Lulu (the name we gave it) can meet your expectations! I live in a condo, and have no room for anything other than the basics! This fits next to my fridgerator, and I roll it and use it every time I need to! I have used it every single weekend (I live a hectic life, and change lots of clothing since I also enjoy gym/sports acitivities), and have not had a single issue since I bought it, about a year ago!I always make sure i add about 10 lbs, so clothes don’t come out too wrinkled! I use the best softner, which helps, and OMG, it is such a great machine! The clothes come out so soft and VERY clean! I run a cycle every month with bleach, to make sure it cleans itself out, however, I don’t think it is a must (I am just used to it I guess).I used to wait in laundromats, and let me tell you, this machine will let you catch up with work around the house, and you can leave to run errands without a single issue. MOst importantly, you don’t have to worry about other people’s dirt!If Lulu ever dies, without a doubt, the very same day and without a single hesitation, would order one (with next day delivery). I can’t live without it, have met every single one of my needs and expectations!

    11. Steven says:

I’ve had this machine for over 6 months. There were cheaper alternatives, but I figured when you’re in that range already, a few hundred to get a real brand that will last a long time was worth it, as well as the extra features. I’ve seen reports of the cheaper ones leaking.

I live in an apartment building built in the 30’s in downtown San Francisco, so I was a little worried about the vibrations. Once I took extra care to perfectly level the machine, it’s not been an issue. With the uneven floors here, I had to extend one foot an inch longer than the others. The only time I think neighbors would even feel anything, is on heavier loads, but it’s not something, like I’ve seen on here, with pictures moving and stuff. I can’t imagine a building in that bad of shape… It’s nothing worse than a small perceptable vibration outside my door in the hall.

As for drying, I’ve seen lots of entries on here. I have never had any problem with drying no matter how much I put in the machine. The only time I ever had clothes not come out dry was when I forgot to put the faucet back on cold after the washing. But since I did research and read the other posts before ordering, I knew ahead of time to use only cold for drying, and I found out why that one time. Normally I will use the ‘fill to here’ line, which is just over halfway, just because you get less wrinkling when you don’t overfill it, but the clothes have always come out dry. They normally are so hot right after the cycle is done, I can see why they have a delay before the door will unlock. Even with the high heat, things still don’t seem to shrink as much as regular dryers. To cut down on wrinkling, I will put in only 4 pair of jeans, and maybe socks too, and they come out fine. I can also get 4 bath towels along with hand towels and wash cloths in one load with no problem.

I learned that with dress shirts, to make sure to put them on ‘less dry’ to reduce wrinkling, as well as non-cotton gym wear like running shorts, anything with spandex, etc.

The only thing I can complain about, and I read about it in another post on here too, is that even though this dryer is 110v, it still generates very high heat and the rubber seals take a while to get ‘broken in’ before they stop putting out a burning rubber smell. It’s not burning like it’s on fire, or malfunctioning, but just how new rubber is when subjected to high heat . It took a month or so before that smell was completely gone. I would use extra fabric softener to over power that smell until it faded. Also, another way around it could be to use the lower heat settings.

One thing I found, having both water hoses going to that Y adapter and getting them to the sink was a pain. I wound up just using the cold water hose since I’m setting the temperature at the faucet. Suprisingly, the machine still seemed to fill fine with warm and hot water settings on the control panel, but to be safe, I normally just select cold watter settings when I do the cycle settings, and put the faucet at what temperature I want for the load.

As for washing, this machine does a very good job at getting clothes clean. If you buy the ‘HE’ (high effiency for front loaders) version of your detergent, you can follow the package for amount to use. It rinses equally well, too well for my taste, because when I pick a detergent scent I like, it gets completely rinsed out leaving no scent behind. So I learned to just use fabric softener instead, but it took some experimenting with amounts since they don’t seem to be designed for the water efficient front loading machines, and if you use the full suggested amount, it is overpowering.

So oveall, after the ‘rubber’ smell went away, I’ve been very satisfied with this machine. It seems very sturdy. Yes, condenser dryers take longer, but they still work just fine. And since they don’t loose heat, even with the longer drying time, they are still energy efficient. I can only assume that people having trouble with the machine drying, either aren’t using cold water, have the bottom of the machine blocked, or have a defective heating element. I am planning on using this machine for a long time, even if I move to an apartment or house with room for two machines.

    12. PennyCA says:

After 10 long years of lugging my laundry to the ‘mat’ or, worse, to my mom’s house (sheesh…as a 30something, it’s embarrassing), I moved to a new apartment with enough space for my very own washer/dryer. Heaven! I love this machine. Sure…it takes a long time. But, who cares! I can finally multi-task! I can wash clothes and clean the house (ahem…watch tv) at the same time. Better still, I can do laundry when I’m not home…just pop it in, set the timer, and go to work. It’s nice coming home to clean clothes. What a luxury!

I live in a sturdy apartment so I haven’t had any problems with vibration. The machine is quiet enough that I can actually sleep through the cycle…and my bedroom is right next to the kitchen where the machine resides.

Better still, it takes really good care of my clothes. It’s gentle and the dry cycle doesn’t shrink stuff. I used to have to pull half of each load out and hang it to dry…for fear that the laundramat dryers would reduce my couture to barbie clothes. But the fancy “dry it with water” mechanism is so gentle I even leave my skinny jeans in for the full dry cycle.

Tips: Be on guard during your first few loads to make sure you have the hose tightened “just right”. Not to tight…not to loose…and you may need to adjust between the first few loads as everything settles into place. Worse case, you’ll get a little water on the floor during the experimentation period. But very soon, you’ll have it mastered and have leak-free washes from there on out.

Two thumbs up! A perfect 10! Worth every penny!

    13. Kevin's Mom says:

I bought this machine about six months ago, and I have to say…, I’ll never use another traditional machine again!

My son and I live in a small apartment and were tired of going to the laundrymat every other weekend, spending countless quarters on half-cleaned clothes, ultimately ending up with bleach stains and/or unknown dirt stains that came from the landrymat machines (and other people’s filthy clothes). Yuck! So after reading many reviews on this machine, I decided to take the plunge and go for it. And I’m glad I did!

Yes, it’s a bit pricy, but the end result is far worth it to me, that and it will pay for itself over and over again. Not only do my clothes come out 10 times cleaner using this machine, but they are also spared the “frying” they would have received in a conventional dryer. Yes, it takes longer for a laundry cycle to complete, but if you factor in the time it takes to walk/drive to the laundrymat with loads of dirty clothes, scrounge up quarters, wash and dry your loads… possibily waiting in line for others to remove their loads…, then the 3 to 4 hour wash/dry cycle on this machine is well worth the wait at home (on a Saturday morning in my sweats/pajamas, not worrying about what my hair looks like, etc.).

I would highly recommend this machine to anyone contimplating the switch. And as one review asked, “where does the lint go?”, I can attest that it goes right out the drain with the rest of the filthy water. This machine does a fantastic job cleaning my clothes and keeping them odor free! Yes, at first our clothes smelled like the machine itself, but once we broke it in now our clothes come out feeling very clean, and smelling great! And it uses very little water, electricity, laundry detergent (use concentrated only) and fabric softener. Not to mention, I also no longer find the need for bleach on my whites. The water gets so hot, as does the steam dry, that my whites come out better than if I had used bleach. No more yellowing of my white clothes! Yay!

    14. Pete, IL says:

After 20 years of going to the laundromat and hating it, I’m finally free. I love my apartment, but there’s no laundry hookups in the place. This is the perfect solution, particularly for my light needs.

The unit is top quality in every respect, looks professional and functions flawlessly. If you take the time to level it properly as the instructions suggest, it also operates very quietly. I was worried about being on the second floor of an old house with floors that creak when you walk on them and someone else living below, but as long as I avoid the top spin speeds (which rattled the pans on my stove), there’s been no problem with vibration (and the medium spin works just fine for my loads).

In order to set it a decent distance from the kitchen sink, I needed to extend the intake hose, so I just picked up a hose extension and used the faucet adapter I purchased from CA. I chose to go with cold-water only to avoid the splitter and that’s worked fine (the clothes wash quite well in cold water and it’s another energy saver). Perfect seal, no leaks. The settings are easy to use and starting up a load is a breeze — then just forget about it until it’s all done.

The drying works extremely well as long as you don’t overload and as long as you try to keep to similar fabrics in a load (for example, the auto dry function works better if you don’t mix 100% cotton shirts with polyester shirts). I’m not good at estimating laundry by pounds, so here are some examples of loads that work well for me (and dry well). 10 t-shirts (2XL) -or- 8 dress shirts -or- 3 weeks of underwear, -or- 2 weeks of socks plus two jeans -or- a set of king size sheets and some pillowcases. The steam drying process is a little odd at first — you open it up and it seems like the laundry’s still damp, but a couple of seconds in the air and it’s perfectly dry. I use the low dry setting for dress shirts and normal for everything else.

The machine is extremely energy efficient (and water efficient). You’ll need to use HE (High Efficiency) laundry detergent.

This is an outstanding unit, particularly for one or two people where this solution is the only way to do laundry at home. It’s also a good option for a environmentally conscious single individual who has hookups, but doesn’t mind doing small loads (and would like to save some physical space).

      PROS:

      1. Has lots of settings to choose from

      2. Excellent wash cycles. Cleans very, very well. I am impressed!

      3. The speed cycle is perfect for everyday wear items without heavy stains.

      4. Dry cycle is not nearly as bad as I’ve heard. It doesn’t dry jeans any worse than a conventional dryer. I put in a load (big armful) of panties and a few socks and it dried them in 45 minutes. I could have fit more in. Keep in mind that if you open the door you’ll get hit in the face with steam so stand back. Once that subsides take out an item or two. They will feel damp but after a minute you will see that they are bone dry and HOT, HOT, HOT! Common sense says that jeans, towels, socks do not dry fast anyway. It does NOT take 2 or 3 hours to dry a load.

      5. It washes more than it dries or so everyone says. I set the dry cycle with the same load in and had no problems whatsoever. And how convenient that is. You set your machine, leave and it’s dry when you get back. I did not see the heavy wrinkling some have mentioned but then I did take the clothes out immediately after drying. They would wrinkle just as bad in a regular unit.

      6. Nice design. Very pretty machine with easy to read panel.

      7. Has a nice chime when the cycle is complete.

      8. Uses less detergent and fabric softener.

      9. Decent noise level. Not outrageously noisy but it does get loud on the jet propelled spin cycle. My ancient dishwasher is noisier.

      CONS:

      1. I live on the second floor with a wood floor. It does state not to use it on this type of flooring but what the hell. It spins so fast on the highest setting it vibrates like crazy (scary!)when it’s warming up then it levels off and vibrates really bad when it’s slowing down. However, I set the spin to medium the next time and it vibrated but not nearly as bad. It only takes 5 minutes to spin.

      2. Ties up my kitchen sink so I can’t do anything in there till I’m done washing/drying.

      3. I have heard you have to have your faucet set to cold in order for the dryer to work. I read that in a review so I just did it. I don’t know how to set the heat any other way with a sink with only one faucet unlike the conventional washer dryer with a cold inlet and a hot inlet. I monitored it the whole time and made sure it was on cold for the dry.

      4. The Y hookup works fine but there is a washer missing that you have to have or water goes everywhere. It goes where the small top part fits into the Y. I had NO leaks, not even a trickle.

      5. Measure!!! The hoses that came with the machine were too short. They are 48″ and I needed 60″ so I had to go and buy a new set.

      6. Don’t bother buying the casters. They are total $%^@#. The machine is too heavy and they would not lock with the weight on them. HUGE hassle after I got them on.

      7. The normal wash cycle is a nightmare. It washed, spun, spun, spun, spun, spun (20 minutes +) and finally dried. I thought something was wrong it spun for so long. It spins for an eternity and it’s ridiculous because it is really only tumbling lightly most of the spin time then it goes into super sonic spin for 5 minutes followed by the dry cycle. . If you choose this setting change to the medium spin. Maybe that will cut the time.

      8. Small loads

Overall I rate this machine 5 stars because the quality is good. If you know what to expect and are not looking to get the same results (as in load sizes)as a conventional set you are fine. It cleans wonderfully, dries in decent time and fits in small spaces.

We were looking for a small laundry machine that would fit into our coop and do both: washing and tumbling without having to reload etc. With the LG we can throw in the laundry in the morning and when we come home in the evening the laundry is done. Unfortunately it does not fold the laundry…As it does not need a vent, you can install it almost everywhere (and it’s easy to install too). We installed it in a closet right next to our bedroom. It’s so quiet that you can barely hear it (direct drive motor). The machine is a front loader and requires different and less detergent. The cycles take longer than top loaders. Depending on how much you load into the machine and which program you choose it can take up to 5 hours including drying. But it cleans better, does not destroy your fabrics and as we throw in our laundry in the morning we do not really care how long the machine really takes. Great detail: a LCD display tells you how long the machine will take depending on how much laundry is in the machine.Tip: only load the recommended volume into the machine to ensure that it really dries well. Fold the laundry as soon as the machine is done to prevent wrinkling. This is a perfect machine for a small household. It’s quiet, it’s small and fits even under a countertop. It’s capacity is suprisingly large and it does a great job. What else do you want? We would buy the machine again.

We had an older Equator brand ventless washer/dryer that died on us after about 10 years of service, and when it came time to buy a new machine the LG WM3431HW looked like the best option out there. After using the LG for a couple of months, I am very happy with it.First off, if you’ve never owned a ventless washer/dryer combo then you need to understand that the dryer function will never work as well as a standard dryer. Clothes take much longer to dry in a ventless washer/dryer combo machine, and they have a greater tendency to wrinkle (unlike in a standard dryer, which tends to get rid of wrinkles). We do most of our drying on a rack inside during winter (saves energy and keep the place from getting too dry) and outside on a line in the summer, so the dryer is not a very key element for me anyway. I consider it good to have “just in case” I need it, or in case I need something dried more quickly than it would on the line. All that said, if your situation limits you to having a ventless combo washer/dryer, the LG is a great little machine.Again, it’s a small machine, so don’t expect to fill it up as much as you would a full-sized washer. But it washes clothes well, it’s quiet, energy efficient, and has many options for different settings. One of the problems (in my opinion) with the LG is that the interface is all digital, little buttoms and lights and stuff rather than dials or buttons. It looks nice and modern, but just seems like one more thing that can break. In fact, when our LG arrived from CompactAppliance, the display wasn’t working.[...] Hopefully, we won’t have any more problems with it.Overall, I’m very happy with the LG washer.

Wow! This combo washer/dryer is EXACTLY what we need. It’s small, energy efficient, quiet, & very good at washing AND drying laundry. If you’re not in a hurry, the dryer feature is nice because you don’t have to transfer clothes from one appliance to another, saving you time/hassle. Also, there is no static cling! Even though you use only a teeny bit of detergent, your laundry is super clean! I know this unit is pricey, but what you pay for is not just the appliance, but customer support, which is excellent, both before & after the sale. What you save in water, water heating, electricity, & detergent means this combo pays for itself in a few years. On top of that, it is pretty. And cool. My husband has nick-named it “Wall-E” for its nifty little controls & beeps. All-in-all, I am really happy my old washer died, giving us the opportunity to use this really cool combo!

This machine is great. I’ve had it for 2 weeks and have no regrets purchasing it (so far). I’ve had to get used to the longer run times – but I put it on “less dry”, take everything out, add a few shakes to the clothing, hang up (or put on a drying rack) and air dry. It takes me about 2.5 hours from start to finish for the machine to run. I usually can get 2 loads done (about every 2 days).

I bought from CompactAppliance.com as a refurbished/open box item for $1100. I did have to buy extra hoses for water intake and drainage (with all the connectors) – about $60 from Home Depot. I wanted my W/D in the corner of my kitchen (11 feet away from the sink) and I don’t have the extra space to move it around. I just make sure I drain all the water out of the hoses after using and wind everything back up neatly and put in a basket next to the washer. It takes me less than a minute to hook the hoses up to the kitchen sink and about 2 minutes to drain and put away.

Thank you to all the opinions on this site – it made all the research and decision to purchase this particular W/D easy. I’ve even have my sister-in-law purchasing one for her apartment.

Unlike other users, I purchased this washer/dryer combo despite having traditional hook-ups and access for a vented dryer. The main reason for the purchase was the energy efficiency. I was prepared for long drying times, noise, shaking and meager washes. To my delight the machine’s performance has markedly exceeded all my expectations. It washes thoroughly and dry times are not the hours and hours I expected. I can easily wash and dry a couple pairs of pants, a couple shirts and two extra large bath towels in 3 hours. Granted, if you don’t take the clothes out when the drying is finished, they will be wrinkled, even during cool down mode. The noise level is entirely when the drain hose is in use otherwise the machine is extraordinarily quiet. I haven’t experienced any problems with excessive vibration, though I was very diligent with the leveling. I cannot speak to time-tested performance as I’ve had the machine only a few weeks. Overall, I’m very happy with the model and would recommend it to anyone who wants an energy effecient washer/dryer combo. Good Day.

This machine is very impressive. However, there are a couple of issues you as a consumer should be aware of: 1) if you are transitioning from a traditional washer/dryer then you will have to adjust to the inherent inefficiency of not being able to dry one load while washing another and 2) the dry time is very slow simply because it is not vented.

On the positive side and contrary to the complaints of other consumers this machine will dry your clothes bone dry. The trick to this is to use the “more dry” setting and let it finish. As a disclaimer to this end I have to say that the clothes I wash are of the cotton variety so the extra heat generated in the “more dry” cycle does not harm them (I cannot express an opinion about delicates or other such items which might be susceptible to damage from heat). That being said and for my particular use the “more dry” setting is the only setting which does not leave my clothing damp but “more dry” of course, means more time.

Another common complaint is that clothes come out wrinkled. My experience is that if you use the “more dry” setting the results are no different than what you would get with a traditional clothes dryer.

In short, this machine is great for people who are constrained by space or inability to use a vented system and who do not have a large volume of clothes to wash in a given period of time.

This LG is my second washer/dryer combo. The first attempt was another cheaper brand (and it had major problems).

I am really pleased with the LG. I’m disabled, so the laundromat is a pain (literally). I can load the clothes before bed or before going to work, and they’re done with no switching around. I really like the simplicity of having one unit do all of the work.

You MUST be sure to check your pockets before running your load. The pump tried to eat a rubber band once. I was able to disassemble the unit enough to get at the motor. It’s really not complicated for a DITY repair. Oh, the filter doesn’t like cough drop wrappers, either.

It’s extremely efficient on the electric bill, too. I would guess my bill increased around $12.00 a month (and that’s better than the cheap model I tried the first time).

One minor gripe. There is a 2-minute delay on opening the door for safety reasons. It’s a bit of a pain if all you need to do is fluff the load.

For a one or two-person household, this model is great.

    23. Juliet says:

My washing machine died last year and I wanted to get a combo washer/dryer because the washer hookups are in my kitchen and the dryer plug is in the garage (with no direct access). I picked this machine because of other reviews and the price. I’ve now been using it for 6 months and still love it! I do at least 5 loads a week and it is still working great. I have even washed cashmere sweaters on the hand wash setting and they did not shrink. Because of the small drum size and the longer dry cycle, some things come out more wrinkled than with my old washer. It doesn’t bother me and I just iron the things that need it. I don’t really care that my sheets are more wrinkled, they smooth out once they’re on the bed. Once you get comfortable with the way the machine works, you can figure out which cycle is best for each type of clothing. I would recommend this machine to anyone who has a small space or wants to be more energy/water efficient.

    24. Space Maximizer says:

This is a great appliance! It is compact and leaves a ton of room in laundry closet for shelving and additional storage. It doesn’t do a lot of laundry at once, but if you are consistent with a load every other day or so (if you live on your own), it seems ok. There was a loud rattling during the spin cycle, but i balanced it a bit better with the turny-knob things and now it’s MUCH quieter. It does take a bit longer to dry towels, but it’s worth it to me.

I live in an upstairs apartment and I’m disabled (mobility issues), so it’s very difficult for me to haul laundry up and down stairs to the laundry room (or, if I have a lot or the laundry room is down, to the laundromat). This little unit is a lifesaver! Yes, it does take quite a while to do a load of clothes, and the capacity is not very large, but a couple loads a week usually does it for me (basically, one weekend day, or two evenings). The clothes do feel a bit damp when first taken out, but that’s because they’re still steamy from the drying process. One good snapping shake (like if you were taking them off the clothesline), and they’re bone dry and ready to fold. It’s also fairly quiet. Not silent, mind you–but much less noisy than my window fan (and what noise it makes is intermittent rather than constant). I was a bit hesitant to purchase it because of the relatively high price, but now that I’ve used it for a while, I would buy it again in a heartbeat! Excellent product!

    26. Stressless Jess says:

We had a small closet space to fit a washer and dryer in, this gave us soo much extra space. It works great and I read all the reviews and thought the dryer wouldnt work, but it works fine. In about an hour the clothes are dry so I have no idea what everyone is talking about. And you can just throw a load in and not have to worry about it. It does take about 2 hours for the whole process, but its a great washer and dryer. Its also not very loud at all, we havent had any issues with vibration either – although it is on a concrete floor. All in all if you dont have the room for a large washer and dryer this works fantastic and fits quite a bit for a small washer – ignore the negative reviews they are bogus! The only two negatives are that you have to wait 2 minutes before you can open the door – which is good because it gets extremely hot in there and you would burn yourself, although it is annoying for impatient people like myself! The only other thing is that it takes a little while for the dryer to finish its “cool down” mode (again probably because its piping hot in there) but you have a lot of settings to choose from and as long as you choose the speed wash setting it only takes 30 minutes to wash a load, and a hint for the dryer if you choose the “timed drying” setting its much quicker- none of the negatives outweigh the pros in my opinion, it works great and its a reasonable price what more do you want?

I look forward to using this product more. I like being able to wash and dry without needing to be back to move a load of wash. My first laod was a set of queen sized sheets. They felt damp when I opened the door until I shook them open once and “Poof” they were dry. Every user will have a learning curve. My primary concern was it fitting into my laundry space in my condo. It fit and now I have shelf room for other laundry supplies. I also can open my closet and hang entry way clothes. I am extremely satisfied at this time.
