    1. Pat Perrine says:

My wife and I purchased our LG WM3988HWA about 8 months ago or so. I read all the reviews I could find before we did it, and it took some big time convincing for my wife to sign on. We didn’t know there was such a machine (all in one) until we started looking to replace our washer when in bit the dust. My wife wanted to move the laundry to our main level (from the basement) so we checked to see what was around.

The only available location for the unit on the main level is in my office (I work from home). We looked at stackers for space savings, and when I saw this one, I really was interested. We bought some things that look like hockey pucks (I think they are called “good vibrations”) to help with vibrations. So we had them from the git go.

Here is some good stuff about this machine: Electric – Standard wall outlet – no need for 220V. Important for us since we were relocating machine. Clean – clothes are noticably cleaner with this baby. Options – many cycles – more than we need. Drying – always come out dry – we use smaller or medium loads. Lint – very little, quick wipe with damp cloth and done.

    2. Cam Seattle says:

Set it and forget it plus the regular outlet and the lack of a dryer vent are what sold it. This thing is in the center of our 600 sq.ft. house and takes up only half the space of a full washer/dryer set. We use this washer about 3 times a week without a hitch. Be sure NOT to use more than a drop of soap or you’ll be getting a second one under warranty within 2 years, which is why we got the extended warranty this time around. Also if you want clothes washed and dried, bank on about 3.5 hours per load. We found it easier to do loads during the week more often than all the laundry over the weekend.

    3. Izabela, FL says:

We bought a townhouse and found the laundry space on the second floor to be very small. We didn’t want to waste space by putting two separate machines so we were very excited to find this machine available in the U.S. It was easy to install (although getting it to the second floor was quite a workout). We are thrilled!!! Clothes come out clean, smelling fresh, they are not over-dried, they keep their colors and size and there are no wrinkles. The machine doesn’t waste electricity, water or detergent. The best thing about it is you can load it, leave for work and when you come home laundry is all done. This is a very powerful machine. We find it to be quiet however during the spin cycle half of the second floor vibrates. On the “low” dryer setting the clothes feel damp to touch when removed but within 5 minutes feel dry.We certainly recommend this product for its excellence, LG for standing behind their product.

    4. Stash, PA says:

Very happy with our new washer/dryer combo, as advertised and more. Easy setup and use. Didn’t realize it was going to be this big but now I understand what is meant by full size, this thing is a beast and anything but compact. But nonetheless, we are thrilled with it and it could.’t have come at a better time with a baby on the way!

    5. Heiskell says:

We have only had this washer/dryer combo a week and have used it every day to catch up on laundry since the other machine(not a LG) broke down again. It has plenty of options for cleaning, Very nice looking especially sitting on the pedestal.

This machine is the same size as a regular washer or dryer, large door and too many whistles and bells to mention here. You can look it up on the LG site and see them. WM3988HWA Look under specificatons and features.

    6. The Rock says:

Great space saver. I’m surprised more people haven’t heard of combo washer/dryer units.

    7. Dollysmom says:

Easy to install. I am amazed at how quiet it is during all cycles. I actually think my clothes are cleaner. I have tried most of the options and I happy to say I have no complaints or concerns.

    8. Zappacosta says:

It has been two months since purchasing this unit after a long debate about buying a product at this price point sight unseen. I almost did not buy it based on fears raised by those whom had bought the LG unit and were used to owning two separate washer and dryer units. That would have kept me away from the best product I have ever bought… bar none. There has never been a second thought after using this highly efficient and easy to use all in one. If you are able to do loads that will not fill it to the brim, and you are the type of person who is able to clearly plan out your washing… you will totally fall in love with its ability to save you time and money. Here’s why: You use less detergent with High Efficiency soap, it takes less time to wash clothes(since most can be done on speed wash… the fastest, least water draining cycle available) due to the lack of dirt on normal wear and tear laundry. Speed wash is done in 20 minutes. It also has a feature of an extra high spin cycle that goes at 1,300 RPM’s and literally spins your clothes dry… even without using the dryer cycle. Our unit is on a cement slab that is right next to our kitchen, and I have never been bothered with any vibrations from the spin or any other cycle thus far. This unit is one of the best rated products as far as its consumption of electricity that my father (who is an electrician) has ever seen. I have been able to do just what the manufacturer has requested to ensure that my all in one will be in good working order each time I use it. All you have to do is take care of the unit I just spent[$] on by wiping the door seal off after each use, and trust me; it takes two seconds to do. After that you need to drain the unit twice a month to get rid of the water it uses during the dry cycle and any lint found in the trap. At most I have disposed of maybe a quarter sized ball of lint from the trap… and that was after running our towels through a wash/dry cycle. I have to admit that I think its fun to turn on the blue LED light during the wash and watch it do its magic. There is also this happy little song it plays to let you know that you have, once again, done something great for yourself and the environment by using a really great product. If you are smart you will buy it. I’m so glad we did.

    9. ArizonaAl says:

This machine is a lifesaver. We moved into a tiny company house in which all of the appliances had to fit into a 12′x7′ kitchen. With a conventional washer and dryer set I would have been left with about 20 inches of counter space. I looked for a stackable set but decided those would make it feel more cramped in the kitchen. When I found this combo unit it had only been on the market for a few weeks (purchased in January 2008) and there weren’t any reviews on it. There were some marginally acceptable reviews on LG’s other combo units available at the time so I bought this one and held my breath.

After over 6 months of daily use (averaging 2 loads per day) I can say it was a wise purchase that has saved me lots of work and saved my family a lot of hard earned money. And it allowed me to have enough kitchen counter space to cook a meal or two along the way.

I’ve read in other reviews that the machine rocks or shimmies. When I set ours up I read that you needed to level the machine and that this was very important. With my father-in-law’s help, and a level, we spent 30 minutes leveling the machine and it has not rocked or moved one bit. It took some effort but it was worth it.

We have also encountered the lint factor. After some experimentation I found that if I don’t dry the clothes to the totally dry point (saving energy and time) the lint is mostly stuck to the glass window and the rubber sealing ring around the door. The easiest way to remove the lint built up from these areas is with a slightly damp microfiber cloth or paper towel. It’s not an issue for me.

I find I get the best use out of the washer if the first load of the day is for larger items or jeans that I can line dry or hanger dry in the house. I put these in first thing when I get up. Then I can start the second load and set it to dry and forget about it until folding time in the afternoon. If I need to do 3 loads in a day I just put one in while I’m making dinner and it is usually done by bedtime. Yes, the clothes usually come out steamy and a little moist, but I shake them out and let them sit for a few minutes before I commence the folding and they are fine. And the capacity is just as good as the conventional top loader we left behind. I can wash 6 pairs of very large men’s jeans with no problem.

The time delay feature is nice and I use it mostly for baby clothes. I put the baby stuff in at night and set it for allergiene or sanitary and the super-dry time which take more than 5 hours to wash and dry it completely. I set it for the middle of the night and there are clean and dry baby clothes in the morning.

    10. SnowRyder says:

We have had this unit for about two weeks now. My Wife and I were nervous about buying a combo unit based on many reviews we had read online about combos from LG and other brands. We have not found any of the bad things about combos to be true with this unit. We love it! It did give off a weird odor the first few times we used it, but after the third use with fabric softener the odor went away. It does take 30 minutes longer to dry because the dryer doesn’t vent… so 90 min. to dry instead of 60. I work in a large commercial laundry as an engineer, and find that most people over dry their laundry. You actually want your laundry to come out with a 2-4% water content (it will feel slightly wet to the touch). Over drying will damage most material… for sure if it cotton. Towels will take 120 minutes on average to dry in this unit with a 2-4% water content when removed. If you live in a humid climate you will need to dry for longer using this unit. We love this unit because you can wash a load while you’re sleep or at work and it is done when you get home or wake-up in the morning. You don’t have to unload the wash and move to the dryer… all in one is so nice!

    11. Jonathan says:

We needed a laundry set on our 2nd or first story but I didn’t know how to vent the dryer and was short on space. I was told not to get a combo or LG but we needed something and the reviews weren’t bad. I knew going in that the drying would take a bit longer and it wouldn’t hold as much as our basement machine, but this one seems to hold quite a bit. We have four boys under 8 and 3 large dogs. We have to do laundry everyday to stay on top of things, but to be able to set it and forget it is WONDERFUL. The steamfresh cycle for getting wrinkles out before work is helpful for me if I don’t iron the night before. The sanitary cycle is helpful for the kid clothes especially underwear and pjs. I can’t stand the lint buildup though, which is primarily dog hair from our Saints and Newfie. It doesn’t trap the lint like a regular dryer does so we have to use a lint brush to get any that doesn’t shake out. I keep one in my desk at work. Dog hair everywhere. Other than that, I’ve told everyone else that they should get one. It is really wonderful. Even the delay cycle. I don’t like the clothes sitting in the dryer getting wrinkled after the cycle is done so it is great being able to delay when the cycle starts so I can time it being done when I wake up in the morning so I can fold right before work. Lastly, the shaking of the upright machine is minimal since I set it on rubberized squares/exercise pads. A tip from another site. Get it and you won’t regret it. Expect the drying to take a while.

    12. SoccerMom says:

Our washer malfunctioned so we decided to try the combination appliance and keep our traditional dryer. I start a load in the combo and when the clothes are on the dry cycle, I switch the clothes to my traditional dryer. I then start my second load in the combo. It works great! I love the machine because I do not have to wait for the traditional dryer to finish one load before I start drying a second load. I can dry 2 loads of clothes at once! We are a family of 5 and need as much extra equipment as we can get.

When I am putting the last load in at night, I do not have to worry about getting up in the middle of the night or in the morning to switch that load to the dryer.

The clothes are damp if you use the “Normal” mode, but I solved that problem by choosing “More” and the clothes come out dry. I used the Allergiene mode for my sheets and they come out so fresh.

    13. Rose says:

The size and no need for a vent are the two very firm positives for this machine. It does take quite a while to wash and dry a load but if you are only washing for 2 it isn’t a problem. If you have kids, you might want something quicker.

    14. Sigrid says:

Overall, I love my LG combo unit. Its size and availability of steam features really pushes it beyond the other combo units available today. Contrary to other reviews I have read, I have not had frustrations with wet clothes after the unit says it has finished drying. It takes more time than a newer conventional washer/dryer pair of the same capacity, but honestly it takes LESS time than the majority of conventional pairs I have had to use over the years. The convenience of being able to forget about the load until it’s both washed and dried is nice.

However, it’s not perfect. The dispenser where you add your detergent and softener etc is poorly designed – you won’t be able to fit anything other than just your regular detergent, which is bad news for people like me who like to use other additives such as Oxy Clean or Borax. If you use those, you’ll have to wait until the machine takes the first amount of detergent into the cycle before adding the rest, which is a pain and not convenient, and furthermore a serious leak develops from the dispenser and will continue throughout the whole cycle if you are not careful when you add your second dose of additives (the best way to avoid this is to make sure you actually pause the cycle, and not simply wait and add it while the machine is running and it’s between water intakes.) Finally, the fabric softener space is again way too small…this is a large capacity machine and I do relatively full loads (and for me, they do get dry when the machine says it’s done) so it gets irritating to remember that I can never use more than a “large size load for a standard capacity machine” dosage (high efficiency machines usually need extra softener, according to the Downy bottle, and this machine’s 4.2 cf capacity makes it extra large.)

Also, because this is a combo machine, it does not have a conventional lint trap system. Cleaning out the lint is much more of a pain with this machine because of this, however it’s not terrible. Make sure you wipe several times (I have found a damp, but not soaked, paper towel works the best for grabbing the lint out) around every crevice of the rubber gasket inside the door. Also, lint tends to get stuck under the spray arms mounted in the drum of the machine, so check there too – you have to reach in and pick it out with your fingernails which is also very inconvenient. But it shouldn’t really take more than a minute or two. Finally, the machine’s outside panelling, door, and drum interior are *extremely* prone to easy denting, scratching, scuffing, or marking…I wish they would have made it a lot tougher, because almost anything left in pockets (even a coin) has the potential to make tiny dents in the machine, and none of the other machines I’ve used seem to be that sensitive.

Again, despite my complaints, I do really like this machine. It gets clothes clean and fresh, has a wide variety of options (the steam fresh feature is just awesome – I have not ironed since!) and lets you forget about a load after you’ve finished fooling with the addtitives.

    15. Borger says:

We ordered this washer/dryer combo after reading mixed reviews, expecting it would be “unique”, but we wanted to free up space in our laundry room and do away with the dryer vent. We love the washer and were very impressed! This machine had a problem the 2nd week, we called LG and they sent out a repairman who found a plastic valve had come loose . . . huge relief there. While the appliance is perfect for 2 people who don’t let laundry pile up, you may have to split up a large, heavy load due to dryer capacity. It does take more time to dry and I sometimes hang up items to finish drying, but I did laundry that way before. Steam Fresh and Delay Cycle are probably my favorite features. NOTE: do order a pedestal drawer by LG, it will save your back!

    17. Sue says:

I LOVE this washer. it gives us the option to ‘forget’ about clothes and they come out dry. However, if you use it as just a washer, and use a stand alone dryer, you will notice VERY fast times and much better dry clothes performance.

My wife is a nurse, often times she needs scrubs cleaned for the morning, I just throw a set in, put it on the sanitary cycle with steam and it makes them absolutely sparkle. I can set it and forget it, when she wakes up in the morning they are clean and dry.

Cycle options are easy, Steam Fresh, Allergine, Sanitary are all features exclusive to LG I believe. The steam fresh is a 20 min cycle, takes smoke smells, etc out of your clothes, allergine kills all dust mites, pollens, etc and is also a steam cycle. Sanitary super heats the water, or you can select steam and it kills all bacteria, great for blood, and other really tough stains.

It has the normal types also, like cotton/normal, large/bulky, delicate, perm press, ultra hand wash, and express wash

the unit is the same size as any standard washer/dryer unit, and the controls are simple to use. graphical interface tells you everything you need to know, lets you pick how dry you want your clothes, whether you want to delay the cycle up to 19 hours, add extra rinse, pre wash, stain level, etc..

It all depends on the type of of laundry you do, if you do a load a night, this one is great, if you try moving mountains of laundry on a set laundry day.. this unit will try your patience without a seperate dryer.

If you only have the option of having an all in one, this is the best version out there, it runs on 110 and doesnt need a dryer vent, which is nice for enclosed applications, like under a kitchen counter, or in an RV but I really wish it had a 220 dryer, to cut the drying time.

The clothes can get tangled and wrinkled really easily if left in, unless a very small load, so keep that in mind

I am very happy with it, and would buy it again

Got it at home depot, paid 1614 for it after haggling down on price, plus the stand (199) and tax & delivery came to 2000 even. then we got a 150 gift card back and delivery reimbursed in a check a couple weeks later

    18. Acinil says:

This is a great product which I would strongly recommend to everyone. I had this product for almost three weeks now. Initially I had a few worries especially since I could not see it in the store before buying it. I read about all the cons posted on this website before buying. In the end it proved that none of them are serious enough to prevent one from buying this product, in my opinion. First, it’s a great product for tight places, such as mine. One of the few trade-offs that one would have to make is the time to wash and dry a load of garments. It can take as long as 4.5 hrs but this didn’t prove to be a major issue for me after all, in spite of being a frequent user of the appliance (I wash at least one load every other day). The increase in washing and drying time is fully compensated by the delay function which allows you to pre-program the start time in advance so the load is ready by the time you get back from work or finish other chores. The fact that you don’t have to move the cloth from one appliance to another allows you to start a cycle and forget about it until it is done. It is a little loud but I don’t think that it is louder than other washer and dryers. Actually, my previous stackable washer and dryer was much louder than this appliance. Also, I found that complaints about clothes being dump at the end of the cycle can be mitigated by selecting “more” under Dry function. It is also important to balance the load, if possible, in terms of matching fabrics of the same type and color and trying to mix small and large garments. The only drawback that I think is worth noting is that jeans tend to come out wrinkled really bad because they don’t seem to unfold during drying cycle, like other garments do, so they tend to keep these longitudinal creases as they fold during the spin cycle.

This washer/dryer is great. I needed a dryer for my condo that did not have to be vented and after researching it for a couple weeks I decided to go with this combo unit. I’ve had it for about 4 months now and I love it. One of my favorite features is Steamfresh. You can load up to 5 articles of clothing and after 20 minutes they are wrinkle free.

Some people below complained about the clothes not being dry at the end of the cycle but I’ve found as long as you don’t put too much clothes in the machine & choose the more dry option, the clothes are almost always completely dry. The cycles do take a while, about 4 hours to wash and dry a load, but it’s not bad with the delay feature. I like to use the delay so my clothes start in the middle of the night & finish right before I wake up in the morning. Then the clothes don’t sit in the dryer all night and get wrinkled.

    21. HelenBG says:

This washer/dryer is very impressive and very quiet. But… You have to change your mindset about washing & drying clothes. If you like the idea of using using much less power and water than a conventional washer/dryer, don’t mind waiting for longer cycle times and don’t mind putting your clothes out on a line or flat drying for a few hours after the load is “done”. – then get this machine. If you’re in a hurry or want crispy clothes, you’ll be disappointed.

I don’t have experience with LG or their service/support, but the lengths their engineers went to, to get this combo to do what it does and use only $11 – $15 worth of power per year is astonishing.

This is one SMART machine. It knows how much time to wash and dry based on the weight of the clothes. Yes it takes 1 hour to wash and 3 hours to dry a normal load but look at the fact that it has no vents and its using less energy and less water than orginal washer and dryers. During one load I had 3 pair of jeans that had wrinkles so I put those 3 jeans in the steam fresh cycle which is only 20 mins. long to get the wrinkles out. The clothes do FEEL damp after drying, but the dampness goes away after a min or two of being out of the dryer. BEST ADVICE READ YOUR USER’S GUIDE FOR DIRECTIONS AND TIPS!!!

I love both the washer and dryer! My husband and I bought them as the floor model at a Best Buy when the 2010 models were arriving, so we got a great deal on the set. The machines have definitely proven their value over and over again.

I have pretty bad allergies, so the allergen setting has been great for things like our sheets and towels. The steam cycle on the dryer is only about 5 minutes and gets wrinkles out of shirts better than a steam iron, if you can believe it! The clothes have hardly any moisture to them when the wash cycle is finished. The dryer has a feature to tumble the clothes every so often after a drying cycle, so if you can’t get to your clothes right away, it prevents wrinkling.

The washer and dryer cycles honestly don’t take that much longer than a traditional top-loading washer/dryer, and the result is much softer, cleaner feeling clothing. Both machines make very little noise, except when washing something with lots of buttons or a zipper, which is to be expected in any machine.

Best of all, they play a really cute song when they are finished with wash and dry cycles! And they were super easy to learn. We highly recommend these products.

have owned combination washer/dryers for over a decade, and the LG WM3988HWA is my third such machine. This is absolutely the best combo unit available. The capacity, cleaning performance, and ability to dry in the same drum without a dryer vent make this the ideal machine for me. The biggest complaint about combos is that they take a long time to dry and that half loads are recommended for good dry performance. The reason the drying takes longer is that ventless combos dry using a condensation process. By passing the hot drum air through a mist of cool water, the “steam” from the clothes is condensed into water and flushed out by the washer/dryer’s water pump. The heavier the fabric, the longer it takes. A full load of cottons will wash and dry in 4.5 hours. A full load of synthetics and some light cottons will wash and dry in 3 hours. I love this machine. The steam feature, both during the wash cycle and as a way to freshen dry clothing, is something I use all the time. There are many other great features like a drum light, delay wash, the ability to customize cycles. Bottom line, this machine takes longer to do what separate machines do, but it requires no vent, just a standard electrical outlet, and everything gets washed and dried after you press start. I love the WM3988HWA, and if you’re thinking about a combo, get this one; you’ll love it too

We purchased the WM3988HWA after careful research of all available washer/dryer combos and have owned ours for over a year now. We love this machine – it is quiet (we put it on a rubber mat to help absorb vibrations) and it cleans beautifully. The direct drive shaft was a plus for me over belt driven drums. The drying time does take longer but this kind of machine requires approaching laundry altogether differently anyway – and it actually suits our very active lifestyles better. I can put in a good size load at night and be ready to fold it and put it away in the a.m. The lint was somewhat of a problem for me until I found that a wet washcloth wiped around the rubber seal would clean all the residue lint easily. We have very little to no lint in our clothes now, and we own 2 large long-haired cats. I have found the interface to be a little bit difficult to decipher, and I still haven’t quite learned how to utilize all the buttons. I keep the instruction book handy so I can read up each time about the various extra features one can add into the programmed washes. I got the 5 year warranty just to be safe, as this is our first washer/dryer combo machine. I would definitely recommend this product.
